Austin's American Airlines flyers are getting a serious lounge upgrade. The carrier's new Admirals Club at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has cleared its permitting stage, and construction is expected to begin this year with an opening targeted for next year.

The new club will occupy the far west end of the terminal above gate 35 — part of a broader consolidation of American's gate holdings there. At more than 12,000 square feet, it will more than double the footprint of the current club. The standout feature is an outdoor terrace, with views stretching to the downtown skyline on one side and across airport operations on the other.

The timing is no accident. American expects its gate allocation at Austin to nearly double once the airport's new terminal opens in the early 2030s, and the lounge is being sized for that growth. The airline hasn't committed to a firm timeline beyond confirming the project is moving — construction is expected to kick off in 2025 and wrap in 2026 — and says more details are coming within a month or so.

For regulars, though, the real story at this club has never been the square footage. The Austin Admirals Club team has a cult following among frequent flyers for a small-city, concierge-style approach to service: staff greet regulars by name, and — unusually — keep working on your itinerary even after you've left the lounge. Travellers report staff proactively rebooking them onto better connections after cancellations, sometimes tracking down earlier flights and leaving notes about the change. It's the kind of personal touch you rarely find at a busy hub club.

Once the new space opens, that service will finally be matched by the setting: a room twice the size, with fresh design and a rare airport perk — fresh air and a view.

Who should care? Anyone connecting through or based in Austin who flies American with any regularity. With airport lounges getting more crowded everywhere, a club that's doubling in size — and one whose staff actively hunt down better itineraries for you — makes an Admirals Club membership (or the right credit card or status tier that gets you in) considerably more attractive for Texas travellers. If your travels take you through Austin, the current club remains open in the meantime; the upgraded version should follow in 2026, ahead of the terminal expansion that will reshape the airport later this decade.
