One of the most valuable perks on the American Express Platinum Card could be getting stricter. An Amex test site — which has previously leaked upcoming changes before they were official — suggests that from January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will need a minimum two-night stay to qualify for the card's hotel credit. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the source of the leak has a solid track record.

Here's how the perk works today. Both the personal Platinum and the Business Platinum offer up to $600 a year in hotel credits, split into two $300 chunks — one valid January to June, the other July to December. You redeem them by booking prepaid hotels through American Express Travel: Fine Hotels + Resorts properties have no minimum stay requirement, while The Hotel Collection already requires two nights. That no-minimum rule at FHR properties is what makes the credit so easy to exploit — a single night at a pricey property wipes out a $300 credit with no extra commitment.

Why would Amex tighten this? The economics of premium cards run on credits. The headline value of the perks usually dwarfs the annual fee, but issuers count on breakage and commissions to make the maths work. Hotel credits are largely merchant-funded, and bookings made through Amex Travel earn the card company a commission. A one-night $300 stay costs Amex real money; a $5,000 three-night booking earns them plenty back. Minimum-stay requirements are the standard lever issuers pull to push cardholders toward the profitable end of that spectrum — plenty of other hotel credits already work this way.

The practical impact depends on how you travel. If you've been using the credit for one-night splurges — arguably the single best value play on the card — that option likely disappears from 2027. You'd need to build a two-night stay into a trip to extract the same value, which isn't always possible on a short break or a long layover. The credit would still be worth something, just less flexible and less disproportionately generous than it is now.

There's a window here, though. Even if the change is announced soon, the suggested effective date is January 1, 2027, which means there's time to use the current version of the benefit. Anyone holding a Platinum card who hasn't burned through this year's credits — and doesn't usually stay two nights at FHR properties — might want to plan a one-nighter before the rules tighten. Watch for an official announcement, which would probably come well before the new year.

For frequent travellers who already book longer stays at luxury hotels, this barely registers. For optimisers who structure trips around credits, it's a real cut in value — and a reminder that premium card perks are never guaranteed to stay put.
