Tampa travellers will soon have a direct line to the Dominican capital. Breeze Airways has announced a new year-round nonstop route between Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Santo Domingo's Las Américas International Airport (AILA), kicking off on 18 June 2027.

The service will run twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, flown on Airbus A220-300s — Breeze's newer, quieter aircraft type. Outbound flights leave Tampa at 10:30 a.m. and land in Santo Domingo at 1:25 p.m., while the return leg departs at 2:25 p.m. and gets back to Florida by 5:30 p.m. That timing works neatly for a four-day city break without burning a day in transit.

According to Tampa International Airport, this will be the first year-round service ever to link the two cities directly. For Breeze, Santo Domingo becomes the sixth international destination from Tampa and its second in the Dominican Republic, joining the long-standing route to Punta Cana. Until now, reaching the capital — as opposed to the resort-heavy east coast — usually meant a connection or a drive from another airport.

Travellers will also get the benefit of competition. Frontier Airlines is lined up to launch its own nonstop Tampa–Santo Domingo service on 17 December 2026, so by mid-2027 two carriers will be fighting for the same passengers. Historically, that's when fares on a route soften, especially on the low-frequency days around each airline's schedule.

Why does this matter? Punta Cana gets the limelight, but Santo Domingo is the country's cultural anchor: the Zona Colonial is the oldest permanent European settlement in the Americas, and the city has a food and music scene that the resort strips can't match. A direct flight from Tampa puts it within easy reach for Florida residents and anyone connecting through TPA — and it makes a two-centre Dominican trip (a few days in the capital, then a transfer east to the beaches) far more practical for US travellers.
