A backpacking trip to the Arizona Trail nearly ended at airport security in Pennsylvania. One half of a hiking duo reached into his bag and handed over the wrong passport — an expired one, dating back to 2023 — while his current document sat at home. With no REAL ID as a backup, things looked grim until the TSA officer pointed out a little-known option: because the passport had expired less than three years earlier and a renewal had already been ordered, he could fill out a special form, pay $45, and board anyway. A panic attack avoided for the price of a nice lunch.

The journey itself was a lesson in modern long-haul logistics. Three flights — Pennsylvania to Charlotte, Charlotte to Phoenix, then a hop to Page in northern Arizona — stretched an 8am departure into a 6pm arrival. There was even a heart-stopping moment in Charlotte when the pair missed their boarding call and only made the flight after their names crackled over the loudspeaker. Practical tip buried in there: a four-hour flight with a dead phone and no snacks is not a recipe for joy. Charge up and eat before you fly.

The final leg is the fun one. The commuter flight from Phoenix to Page runs on a small aircraft with a 2-1 seating layout, boarding straight from the tarmac — which means window-seat views of the Arizona desert the whole way. Page's airport is a single-room affair with no baggage claim; staff simply walk your bags off the plane and hand them over. For anyone hiking the Arizona Trail, which starts just outside town, this is a far easier entry point than it sounds.

Small-town warmth sealed the day. A local shuttle driver named David, who lived near the airport and had watched their plane land, wandered over to offer the pair a lift to their Airbnb before they'd even collected their bags. The next morning he and his wife Terry were due to drive them to the trailhead to begin the roughly 800-mile thru-hike. The travellers spent their last night of comfort sorting food resupply, charging gear, downloading offline maps and doing a final load of laundry — the sensible pre-trail ritual for anyone heading into a long-distance hike.

Why should a regular traveller care? Beyond the genuinely useful passport-expiry workaround (worth knowing if you travel on a recently renewed document), the story shows how reachable Page is — a small Arizona gateway town that serves as the launch point for the Arizona Trail and sits near Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Sometimes the smallest airports come with the biggest surprises.
