Faro's oldest street party is back. The Feira de Santa Iria, a fair with centuries of history behind it, opened on October 15 at Largo de São Francisco and runs through Sunday, October 25 — eleven days of stalls, snacks and rides in the heart of the Algarve capital.
Run by the municipal company Ambifaro, the fair is one of the region's longest-standing traditions and draws a loyal mix of locals and returning visitors every autumn. It's as much a community fixture as a tourist draw, but that's exactly what makes it worth timing a trip around: this is Faro as Faro does it, not a event laid on for holidaymakers.
The shopping side covers the classic market spectrum — clothing, handbags, footwear, ceramics, toys and handicrafts from local producers. But the real pull for most people is the food. Portuguese fairground staples take centre stage: farturas (deep-fried dough spirals dusted with sugar, dangerously moreish), roasted chestnuts, nuts and caramelised sweets, alongside a broader spread of street food.
There's a proper fairground too, with rides and attractions aimed at everyone from small children to teenagers and adults, which makes it an easy evening out for families. Entry is free for the whole run, and drivers get a bonus: free parking at the Pontinha car park on weekdays until October 28.
Hours vary across the eleven days, so check before you go. Opening day ran 5pm to midnight; Fridays and Saturdays (October 16, 17, 23 and 24) stretch longest, from 3pm to 1am; weekdays October 18 to 22 run 3pm to midnight; and the final Sunday closes earlier at 11pm. For travellers, the appeal is simple. Late October is a quiet, pleasant time in the Algarve — the summer crowds are gone, the weather is still mild, and the Santa Iria Fair gives you a genuine local event to build an evening around. Pair it with Faro's old town, its waterfront and the Ria Formosa wetlands on the doorstep, and you have a solid autumn city break that most visitors skip in favour of the resort towns further west.
If you're in the Algarve before October 25, this is the easiest free night out in the region.
