Calgary's Olympic Oval is giving locals a head start on Halloween with Frozen Frights: Halloween on Ice, a costume-friendly public skate on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the University of Calgary, and you can drop in for the whole afternoon or just a lap or two.
The venue alone is worth the trip. Built for the 1988 Winter Olympics, the Oval features a 400-metre speed skating track and opens its ice to the public year-round, with more than 50 recreational sessions a month. Frozen Frights adds a festive twist: kids get candy, costumes are encouraged by the university, and families can skate on one of the fastest strips of ice in the world.
Entry is cheap — $7.25 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors, paid at the door. Don't own skates? Rentals run $7.65 and include a helmet; a helmet alone is $2.50. Helmets are mandatory for everyone on the ice, so budget for one if you're arriving empty-handed.
There are a few costume ground rules. Skip loose pieces, sharp accessories, or anything that could drag on the ice or tangle up other skaters. Think streamlined superhero rather than flowing cape-and-tassel witch.
The address is 288 Collegiate Blvd. NW, on the university campus in northwest Calgary. If you miss the Halloween session, the Oval's regular public skate calendar makes it an easy year-round stop — and it pairs nicely with a day trip to nearby Banff, whose mountain film festival is also on the city's seasonal lineup.
