Deauville has long been France's ritziest Atlantic escape — horse races, film festivals and champagne on the boardwalk — and now it has a spa to match. Guerlain, the perfume house that has fragranced French nobility since the 19th century, has opened its first spa at Le Normandy Hotel, tucked into what used to be the building's restaurant.

The space keeps the original 1952 blonde wood, which floods the rooms with warm golden light, and the brand's bee motif (dating to an 1853 cologne made for Empress Eugénie) shows up everywhere, from giant amber perfume bottles in reception to a ceramic queen bee now perched on the hotel's rooftop alongside roughly 50 other creatures by local potter Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent. The signature move is a perfume "organ" — a carousel of fragrances that wafts scented air across the room — and during one visit the whole spa smelled of Cuir Béluga, a soft vanilla that reviewers liken to cream-coloured cashmere.

Three treatments were created just for this spa. Souffle sur Les Planches is a two-hour body-and-face ritual with warm black basalt stones and vanilla oil, ending with a glow meant to mimic a brisk walk on Deauville beach. Éclat de Star, inspired by the Deauville film festival, layers a collagen sheet mask with cheekbone-sculpting massage, jaw-release work and icy cryo globes to de-puff tired skin. Puissance Écastre — the Equestrian Power massage — borrows from racehorse conditioning: therapists climb onto the bed for deep assisted stretching that reportedly leaves you standing taller. Treatment suites number seven, with heated surround-sound beds and LED masks.

This is not a place for denial. The relaxation room has vibrating zero-gravity loungers and grounding soundtracks, but the snacks are macarons, madeleines and calissons rather than herbal tea, and guests are nudged towards Le Bar, where celebrity barman Frédéric Desmars mixes Cosmopolitans to a live pianist's Elton John set. The hotel's 271 rooms come with toile de Jouy wallpaper and Guerlain-stacked bathrooms; the Un Homme et Une Femme suite nods to Claude Lelouch's film shot here. Food leans local — Normandy sole, roasted Camembert with honey, Côte de Bœuf.

Practicalities are stronger than most palace spas manage: twenty bedrooms are wheelchair accessible, there's ramped spa access, and kids get their own "My First Guerlain Moment" mini treatments. Ask for therapist Marion Randon from nearby Honfleur, who locals rate as the golden touch. And before you leave, look up at those rooftops — cats, dragons, rearing racehorses and one very pampered bee.
