Spending Thanksgiving or Christmas at sea no longer means skipping the traditions. Holland America Line has laid out its holiday programme for the 2026 season across its fleet, and it goes well beyond a bit of tinsel in the atrium: tree-lighting ceremonies, carolling, holiday films, crew performances and family activities are all on the roster, with celebrations covering Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and a champagne-fuelled New Year's Eve welcome for 2027.

Food is clearly the centrepiece. Expect Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings, Breakfast with Santa, a Feast of the Seven Fishes, Nutcracker Tea, latkes for Hanukkah, and eggnog on tap. New for 2026 is a Magnolia Gingerbread Cake in the main Dining Room, part of the line's ongoing partnership with Magnolia Bakery. The bars are getting in on it too, with a Christmas Cocoamint Coffee, Vanilla Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte and cocktails like a Rudolph the Red Margarita and a Minty Elf Martini.

One of the nicer touches: every ship's culinary team builds its own gingerbread village, with designs that differ from ship to ship. Given these displays take hours of planning, baking and assembly, they're worth seeking out even if you're not travelling with kids.

Where can you actually sail? The featured 2026 holiday itineraries lean warm. Koningsdam runs seven-day Baja Peninsula loops roundtrip from San Diego on 21 November and 19 December, while Zaandam offers a longer 15-day Panama Canal Holiday from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale departing 19 December. From Fort Lauderdale, Rotterdam sails an 11-day Eastern Caribbean Holiday through the Windward and Leeward Islands on 22 December, Volendam does a 14-day Southern Caribbean trip to the ABC and Windward Islands the same day, and Eurodam departs 26 December on a seven-day Western Caribbean run to the Greater Antilles and Mexico.

There's a booking angle worth knowing about. The line's Save on Sunshine promotion cuts fares by up to 50%, and kids sail free as third or fourth guests in the same stateroom on select departures — handy if you're dragging the whole family away for the holidays. Book between 13 and 21 October 2026 and you can also snag up to $200 in onboard credit per stateroom plus complimentary specialty dining on selected holiday sailings.

Why it matters: holiday cruising solves a real problem for a lot of people — the desire to celebrate with family without anyone cooking, cleaning or hosting. These sailings bundle the familiar rituals (a proper turkey dinner, a menorah, a midnight toast) with genuinely good warm-weather itineraries in the Caribbean, Mexico and via the Panama Canal. If the idea of swapping a grey December at home for the ABC islands sounds appealing, the October 2026 booking window is the moment to move.
