Colombia ends the year on a high note, and November and December are arguably the best months to see it. Christmas lights switch on, fairs take over whole cities, and the rains ease across much of the country. Here's what five destinations offer to close out 2026.
Medellín is the obvious pick for festive atmosphere. Its citywide Christmas lights display has previously used millions of bulbs across parks, avenues and riverbanks, and the season kicks off with the Alborada on the night of November 30 into December 1 — fireworks, music and family parties marking the start of the final month. Between light-viewing, travellers can explore Parques del Río, Pueblito Paisa, the leafy Laureles neighbourhood and the bars of El Poblado, fuelled by the local dish of choice, bandeja paisa.
Cali turns up the volume from December 25 to 30, when the 69th Feria de Cali runs for six days. The headline event is the Salsodromo, a parade of salsa schools performing choreographed routines in elaborate costumes, backed by concerts, collector gatherings and street festivities across the city. Away from the fair, San Antonio and the riverside Bulevar del Río are worth wandering, and dance academies across town offer salsa lessons for beginners. One warning: crowds are big, so book accommodation and transport well ahead.
Cartagena suits anyone wanting heat and history in equal measure. The colonial Walled City, San Felipe de Barajas Castle and the street-art-filled Getsemaní district keep you busy, while boat trips to the Rosario Islands handle the beach side of things. November still carries rain near the tail end of the wet season, and it also brings the city's Independence Festivities around November 11. December is generally drier and more reliable for beach days.
The Coffee Region — Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda — trades city lights for mountain towns. Salento and the Cocora Valley, with its towering wax palms, are the stars, alongside Filandia's colourful streets and Santa Rosa de Cabal's hot springs. Coffee farm tours walk you through the whole production process, and December's drier weather makes hiking easier. Pack layers: temperatures vary with altitude and mountain afternoons turn cold.
Bogotá rounds out the list with a distinctly local tradition: novenas de aguinaldos, nine nights of gatherings with carols, prayers and seasonal food held December 16 to 24 in parks, plazas and public spaces. Add La Candelaria's historic streets, museums and a trip up Monserrate for city views. Thanks to its altitude, the capital is cool — bring warm clothes and an umbrella.
Who is this for? Medellín and Bogotá deliver Christmas atmosphere, Cali is for music and party-lovers, Cartagena suits sun-seekers, and the Coffee Region works well for families or a slower multi-day escape. Some travellers could realistically combine two or three in a two-week trip — Cali's fair dates dovetail neatly with beach time on the coast.
