A restored 19th-century farmhouse in Portugal's Algarve is about to become one of southern Europe's most intriguing wellness addresses. Shanti-Som, the retreat brand that has been running a popular property in Marbella since 2011, opens its second resort near Faro in February 2027 — and it's taking a deliberately unfussy approach in an industry obsessed with cryotherapy chambers and hyperbaric gadgets.

The idea behind Shanti-Som Algarve is simple: teach guests habits they can actually maintain once they get home. Hotel manager Ophélie Acris describes the place as a hybrid of a holiday, a private wellness club and a gym — somewhere you can switch off and be looked after, but also leave with practical tools for sleeping better, getting stronger or simply resetting.

The property itself sets the tone. There are 22 rooms inside the converted farmhouse, set within four hectares of orange and almond orchards, and it sits just 20 minutes by car from Faro Airport — an easy arrival after a short hop from most of Europe.

Guests choose from six structured programmes: relaxation, yoga, pilates, detox, strength and fitness, and burnout and nervous system recovery. The last two are exclusive to the Algarve site. Strength and fitness targets longevity, bone density and muscle as guests get older, combining one-on-one training, reformer Pilates, guided hikes and a full health check with a nutritional consultation. The burnout programme leans the other way — breathwork, guided meditation, sound healing, hot-cold contrast therapy and life coaching sessions.

The facilities back it up: an infinity pool, sauna, hammam, ice bath, gym and private treatment rooms for massages and facials. All stays are full-board, and you can book for as few or as many days as you like, which makes this more flexible than many retreats that lock you into fixed weekly stays.

The location is a genuine bonus. The retreat sits within easy reach of some of the Algarve's best coastline — Praia da Falésia with its striking red cliffs, the photogenic Praia da Marinha, and the calm waters of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a protected natural park popular with birdwatchers and kayakers.

For travellers, this fills a nice gap. Wellness tourism keeps growing, but much of it skews either spa-luxury or bootcamp-intense. Shanti-Som's model — structured goals, small property, full-board simplicity and a beautiful rural setting a short drive from a major airport — suits anyone who wants a proper reset without the clinical vibe. It will particularly appeal to burnt-out professionals eyeing the nervous system programme, and to over-50s interested in the strength and longevity focus.

Bookings open ahead of the February 2027 launch, and given how quickly the Marbella original built its following, early reservations are probably wise.
