A new film version of Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters, has just joined the long line of Jane Austen adaptations — and it was shot at a string of very bookable British locations, from the National Gallery in London to Dartmoor and the country houses of Dorset. For anyone who has ever finished an Austen film and wanted to move straight into the estate, the good news is that many of the mansions, cottages and castles used over the years let you do exactly that.

Start with the new film itself. The Dashwoods' grand but doomed home, Norland Park, was played by Kingston Russell House in Dorset, a 17th-century mansion a few miles from the Jurassic Coast. The owners rent a two-bedroom guest wing on Airbnb, complete with William Morris wallpaper, a wood-burning fireplace and six acres of formal gardens. For the 1995 Oscar-winner with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, Barton Cottage was Efford House on the 5,000-acre Flete Estate in Devon — a dog-friendly, seven-bedroom holiday home with the new King Charles III England Coast Path running through the grounds. The 2008 BBC version used Blackpool Mill Cottage near Hartland Abbey on the north Devon coast, which sleeps eight and sits about 75 yards from a surf-friendly stretch of the Atlantic.

Pride and Prejudice fans have the richest pickings. The famous rain-soaked proposal scene from the 2005 film happened at the Temple of Apollo in Stourhead, Wiltshire, where the National Trust rents a stone cottage sleeping seven at the estate gates. Chatsworth House in Derbyshire — widely thought to have inspired Pemberley — can't be slept in, but Chatsworth Escapes offers cottages, shepherd's huts and even a 1580s Hunting Tower on the 1,000-acre estate. Lyme Park in Cheshire, where Colin Firth took his infamous pond dip in 1995, rents two Edwardian cottages through the National Trust; walking to the pond is encouraged, swimming is not.

Further afield in the canon: Peacock Cottage at Kirby Hall in Northamptonshire (Mansfield Park, 1999), with after-hours access to the ruins and gardens; three restored 18th-century cottages on the Newby Hall estate in North Yorkshire, a Christopher Wren house used for Mansfield Park in 2007; and Firle Place in East Sussex, the Woodhouse home in Emma (2020), where you can book anything from a rustic cottage to a gastro-camping site with open-fire cooking. Crossing into Ireland, the 2007 Northanger Abbey adaptation filmed at Lismore Castle in County Waterford — rentable for weddings and big gatherings, with 15 bedrooms — while the nearby Ballyrafter B&B makes a more realistic base. And for the 2022 Netflix Persuasion, Trafalgar Park in Wiltshire has three holiday cottages on the old estate grounds.

This is set-jetting with real substance: unlike most filming locations, these are working places to stay, from shepherd's huts to full-castle buyouts. It suits Austen devotees, literary road-trippers and anyone plotting a slower, prettier corner of the British Isles — ideally with a dog and a battered paperback in tow.
