Southwest Airlines is rebuilding its Rapid Rewards program from the ground up. From January 1, 2027, the familiar A-List and A-List Preferred tiers disappear, replaced by a three-level ladder: Silver, Gold and a new Platinum tier at the top. The big prize at Platinum is unlimited Companion Pass travel — a companion flies free (taxes and fees only) on eligible flights whenever you book.

The qualification math shifts too. Silver now requires 25 one-way flights or 35,000 tier-qualifying points (up from 20 flights, points unchanged). Gold jumps to 50 flights — though the points bar actually drops from 70,000 to 65,000. Platinum demands 100 flights or 140,000 points. Frequent flyers who qualify on cheap, short hops may find the new flight-count thresholds tougher.

Perks scale with each tier. Silver gets one free checked bag and a 40% points bonus (up from A-List's 25%). Gold gets two bags and a 60% bonus — notably down from A-List Preferred's 100% bonus. Platinum adds three free bags, complimentary Extra Legroom seats at booking when available, a 120% bonus, and that unlimited Companion Pass. Everyone keeps same-day standby, priority lanes and dedicated phone support.

There are consolation prizes along the way. Chase co-branded Southwest credit cards will earn one tier-qualifying point per dollar spent from 2027 — a much friendlier earn rate than the old block system. New milestone rewards recognise flyers before they even reach Silver, and intermediate progress between Gold and Platinum can earn three Companion Pass trips. One significant loss, flagged by NerdWallet: credit card welcome bonuses will no longer qualify you for Companion Pass, closing a popular shortcut.

The program also stops being Southwest-only. From spring 2027 you'll earn and redeem points with Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad, stretching into Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Rental car redemptions arrive in November 2026, and seat redemptions for Preferred and Extra Legroom come later in 2027.

Most striking of all: Southwest is getting into lounges. The Southwest Icon Lounge network, built with Chase, debuts at Nashville International in late 2027, accessed via a new premium credit card. It's all part of the airline's wider pivot toward premium — assigned seating, bag fees, extra-legroom rows, and Starlink WiFi across the fleet by fall 2027 (free WiFi for Rapid Rewards members). The push follows pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management.

Why should a traveller care? If you fly Southwest often, your status path and perks are changing in both directions — some earn rates improve, others shrink, and the Companion Pass game has new rules worth planning around. If you've never bothered with Southwest, the lounge, international partner redemptions and free WiFi make the airline meaningfully more competitive with Delta and United. Existing A-List members will map to Silver, A-List Preferred to Gold, so nobody starts from zero.
