Southwest Airlines has laid out the fine print behind its big 2027 Rapid Rewards revamp, and the picture is mixed. There are genuine wins — new airport lounges, a new top status tier, premium cabin awards on partner airlines, and a much better earning rate on card spending — but the beloved credit card route to the Companion Pass is being shut down.

The headline loss is the Companion Pass, arguably the best perk in US loyalty programs. From January 1, 2027, card sign-up bonuses, referral points, anniversary points, bonus-category spending and partner earn (hotel stays, car rentals) will no longer count toward the pass. Only tier qualifying points and flights will. Two levels replace today's single threshold: 95,000 tier qualifying points or 75 one-way flights gets you three Companion Pass trips per year, while 140,000 points or 100 flights brings Platinum status with unlimited companion travel. There's one escape hatch: get approved for a Southwest credit card on or before December 2, 2026, and its sign-up bonus can still count toward a pass, even if you finish the spend in early 2027.

Status is being rebranded and re-priced too. A-List becomes Silver, A-List Preferred becomes Gold, and a new Platinum tier sits on top. Flight requirements rise 25% at the lower tiers, and Southwest is also cutting earn rates on its priciest fares — Choice Preferred drops from 10 to 8 points per dollar, Choice Extra from 14 to 10 — meaning the real spending needed for status can rise even where headline thresholds fall. Some existing members get temporary protections: current A-List Preferred members keep their 100% earning bonus as Gold through the end of 2027.

On the plus side, every Southwest credit card will earn one tier qualifying point per dollar from 2027, uncapped — a big upgrade that makes Silver (35,000 points) and Gold (65,000) reachable through everyday spending. A one-time 10,000-point boost after 130,000 points can push heavy spenders to Platinum for 2027. New perks include two milestone rewards (seat certificates at 20,000 points, the Companion Pass trips at 95,000), priority lanes and same-day standby for all elites, and free checked bags by tier.

The lounges now have a name: Southwest Icon Lounge, a nod to co-founder Herb Kelleher, with the first rendering released for Nashville. A premium card offering lounge access is planned.

If you chase Southwest status, the timing matters. Existing Companion Passes earned in 2026 run through the end of 2027, so qualifying the old way this year — ideally with a card approved before the December 2, 2026 deadline — is the play. After that, casual hobbyists will find the pass far harder to reach, while heavy card spenders may actually reach Gold more easily than before.
