Zürich's Storchen hotel has been a fixture on the Limmat river for generations, and after a recent renovation it has repositioned itself as one of the city's top five-star properties. A long-term guest of the hotel recently checked in for a second stay and shared a detailed look at what you actually get for your money — and where the compromises are.
The location is the headline act. The Storchen sits right on the water at the edge of Lake Zürich, in the middle of the old town, and the river-facing rooms are the ones to book. The reviewer stayed on the fifth floor — the highest guest floor — and the window view was the standout of the whole stay, with impressive sunrises over the water and a soft evening glow before sunset. Rooms themselves are compact: the fifth-floor room had a queen bed, ensuite bathroom, small wardrobe and a desk. Everything you need, but don't expect expansive space. If views matter to you, ask for a river-facing room on a higher floor when booking.
Facilities lean classic rather than flashy. The hotel runs Zürich's only cigar lounge, open every evening, and there's a fifth-floor fitness centre with free weights, a treadmill, bicycles and a couple of machines, plus trainers available for private one-on-one sessions. Come summer, the rooftop bar — The Nest — opens to guests and is the spot for that sunset view over the river.
Breakfast emerged as a genuine highlight of the stay, served in the dining room with both an à la carte menu for cooked dishes and a buffet covering yoghurts, mueslis, cold meats, boiled eggs and croissants. For a day of walking the old town and the lakefront, it's a solid way to start.
Timing matters here. Summer is when Zürich is at its liveliest, and the rooftop and waterfront come into their own. But winter has its own appeal at the Storchen — the hotel sets up outdoor heaters along the water and serves hot chocolates riverside, which the reviewer described as properly cosy. Either season works; they're just different experiences.
Who is this for? Travellers who want a full-service, well-located five-star base in central Zürich and care more about views and atmosphere than vast rooms. The practical advice from the review: book directly with the hotel for the best rates, and specify river-facing plus a high floor (five is the top) — the difference in experience is significant. If you'd rather economise, smaller rooms elsewhere in the city will do the job, but you'd be giving up the view that makes this property what it is.
