The Hoxton is finally landing in Hamburg. The lifestyle brand, which started out in London's Shoreditch in 2006 and turns 20 this year, has announced its second German property, set to open in summer 2027 on Alter Wall in the city's Nikolaiviertel district. It'll follow the brand's existing Berlin hotel and its Vienna outpost, making it the third Hoxton in the German-speaking world.

The hotel takes over a 1950s building across ten floors, with 188 rooms spread between the first and eighth storeys. Room categories keep the brand's playful naming convention — think 'Cosy', 'Roomy' and 'Biggy' — and there are 32 interconnecting rooms, a genuinely useful detail for families or groups travelling together who don't want to book separate apartments.

Food and drink look like a big part of the draw. The ground floor will hold a canal-side restaurant serving breakfast through dinner, plus the all-day lobby bar that doubles as a hangout for locals as much as guests. Head up to the roof and there's a seafood restaurant with an Iberian slant, a wraparound terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Elbphilharmonie, the Michel and the Town Hall — arguably the city's best postcard views in one frame. There's also a private dining room for up to 20 and the brand's signature events space, The Apartment, complete with three meeting rooms, a pantry kitchen and its own terrace over the canal.

Swedish design studio Stylt Trampoli is handling the interiors, pulling inspiration from Alter Wall and the surrounding streets. Expect vintage and custom furniture, cosy corners and work from local artists — the 'open-house' feel The Hoxton has built its reputation on. The Nikolaiviertel location puts guests in a pocket of the old town where historic buildings mix with modern architecture, independent shops and galleries, all a short walk from the canals that define Hamburg.

For the brand, it's part of a wider European push — openings in Oslo and Madrid are slated for next year too. For travellers, it means a new mid-market design hotel option in a part of Hamburg that's more characterful than the main hotel strip around the Hauptbahnhof. If you like hotels where the lobby actually feels like a neighbourhood hangout and the rooftop is worth bringing friends to, this one to watch for summer 2027.
