American Airlines has released new renderings of the Admirals Club it plans to build at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and the standout feature is a first for the entire lounge network: an outdoor terrace. If you've ever wanted to sip a pre-flight drink in fresh Texas air instead of a windowless lounge, this will be the place to try it.

The new club will span about 12,000 square feet on the west side of the terminal — roughly double the footprint of American's existing Austin lounge, which covers around 6,000 square feet and will stay open until the replacement debuts. Renderings show the airline's newer lounge design, with separate zones for relaxing, dining, working and recharging, plus views over downtown Austin and the airfield. Construction starts this year, though no opening date has been confirmed; realistically, expect late 2027 or 2028 based on how these projects typically run.

American's chief customer officer Heather Garboden framed it as part of a push to "elevate" the airline's presence in Austin, and the terrace fits into a broader rethink of the Admirals Club product. It's one piece of a wider lounge building spree: American says it has more than a dozen premium spaces in the pipeline, including new Admirals Clubs, Provisions by Admirals Club outlets, Flagship Lounges and joint check-in areas. A new Flagship Lounge is planned for Miami and Charlotte's first-ever Flagship Lounge is also on the list — though neither has a timeline yet.

There's some context worth knowing here. Austin was briefly a much bigger deal for American — after the pandemic the airline tried to build it into a focus city, then reversed course when the expansion lost money. Today American mostly flies from Austin to its hubs and focus cities. Delta has been picking up the slack and expanding aggressively at AUS, filling some of the gap American left. So the new lounge signals investment in the passenger experience rather than a return to route growth.

For travellers, the takeaway depends on how you fly. If you're an American loyalist or hold a lounge membership or premium credit card that grants Admirals Club access, your Austin wait is getting meaningfully better — more space, a fresher design and a genuinely novel amenity. If you're based in Austin and loyal to Delta, nothing here changes your calculus. And for everyone else, patience is the operative word: American's lounge upgrades are announcements first, realities later, with many openings still one to three years out. Still, an outdoor terrace is a genuinely fresh idea for a US airline lounge, and if it works in Austin you could see the concept spread to other clubs in the network.
