Kazakhstan now has the International Judo Federation's flag in hand, formally confirming that Astana will stage the 2027 World Judo Championships from June 7 to 14. The handover happened in Baku, Azerbaijan, during this year's World Championships, where IJF Secretary General Lisa Allan passed the flag to Kuanyshbek Yessekeyev, president of the Judo Federation of Kazakhstan, with Azerbaijan Judo Federation vice president Elnur Mammadli making the transfer.
This will be the second time Kazakhstan has hosted judo's biggest global competition — the first was back in 2015. The country has been building a solid reputation on the international judo circuit, having also run the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam from 2023 through 2026, a fixture on the IJF calendar that feeds directly into Olympic qualification.
The timing of the 2027 edition is no accident. Held just over a year before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the championships are a crucial stop in the qualification race, with fighters collecting ranking points toward a place at the Games. Expect the world's top judoka — including France's dominant heavyweights, Japan's deep squad, and Kazakhstan's own strong tradition in the sport — to be at full tilt in the Kazakh capital.
For Kazakhstan, it is also a statement. Yessekeyev framed the hosting rights as a sign of international confidence in the country's ability to run major sporting events, and his federation says it will focus on meeting IJF organizational standards while prepping the national team.
Why should a traveller care? A World Championships is one of the more accessible ways to see elite sport up close: sessions are affordable, the arena atmosphere is electric, and the whole thing wraps up in a week. Pairing a visit with June in Astana — when the steppe capital finally enjoys warm, long days — makes for an unusual city break. The city itself is a spectacle of futuristic architecture, from the Khan Shatyr tent to the Bayterek Tower, and remains one of the more off-the-radar capitals in Central Asia. With a global sporting event drawing visitors and investment, 2027 is a decent excuse to see it before the crowds figure it out.
Dates to note: June 7–14, 2027, in Astana, Kazakhstan. Tickets and hospitality details will follow closer to the event via the IJF and the national federation.
