If you've bought bottled water in Belize, chances are it came from Bowen & Bowen, the country's biggest brewer and distributor. Its long-running Crystal Water brand is now being renamed Crystal by Dasani, tying the familiar local label to the global water brand owned by Coca-Cola.
The switch started in mid-September with the big five-gallon bottles — the kind that sit on top of water coolers in hotels, restaurants and homes across the country — and will roll out across the rest of the Crystal range over time. For a while you'll see both versions in shops, since existing stock with the old Crystal labels stays on shelves until it sells through. Eventually, Crystal by Dasani will be the standard packaging nationwide.
Bowen & Bowen insists this is purely cosmetic. According to the company, the water, the production process and the quality standards are all unchanged. Rosanna Villanueva, the company's corporate relations manager, pointed out that Crystal still goes through the same 12-step process it always has. The reasoning behind the move is visibility: Coca-Cola is already one of Bowen & Bowen's external partners, and putting a globally recognized name on the bottle is meant to strengthen the brand at home while keeping the loyalty of customers who grew up with Crystal.
For visitors, this is less news than a small practical note. Crystal has been the default bottled water in Belize for years — you'll find it in corner shops in Belize City, beach bars on Ambergris Caye, and grocery runs in the Cayo. If you arrive mid-transition, the bottle in the fridge might say either Crystal or Crystal by Dasani; it's the same water from the same source. The five-gallon dispensers in your rental or hotel may already carry the new look.
It's also a small window into how Belize's consumer market works. Bowen & Bowen is a dominant local player — beer, soft drinks, water, snacks — and its partnership with Coca-Cola means international brands share shelf space with domestic staples. A rebrand like this signals how closely the local market is tied to global beverage giants, even for a product as mundane as water.
Worth remembering for your trip: tap water quality varies across Belize, and most travellers stick to bottled or filtered water, especially on the islands and in rural areas. Buying a large five-gallon refill for a longer villa or condo stay is cheap and cuts down on plastic waste compared with a stack of small bottles. And if you were attached to the old Crystal logo as a souvenir of trips past, grab one soon — once the current stock is gone, the Dasani era begins.
