Citi's ThankYou program has quietly become one of the more interesting transferable points currencies out there, and the arrival of American AAdvantage as a transfer partner has only raised the stakes. If you've been eyeing those points but aren't sure which Citi card actually deserves a spot in your wallet, the current lineup boils down to two "hub" cards and two no-annual-fee "boosters" that work best together.

The hub cards matter because they let you transfer all your points to airline and hotel partners at the best possible rate — partners that include American, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Singapore KrisFlyer, and EVA Air. The premium option is the Citi Strata Elite, launched in 2025 with a hefty $595 annual fee. In exchange you get 12x points on hotels, rental cars and attractions booked through Citi Travel, 6x on flights through the portal, 6x on dining during "Citi Nights" (Friday and Saturday, 6pm to 6am ET), 3x on regular dining, and 1.5x on everything else. The credits do heavy lifting too: up to $300 in hotel credits, $200 in Splurge Credits usable on American flights, $200 with Blacklane, four Admirals Club passes and a Priority Pass membership. The welcome bonus is 75,000 points after $6,000 spend in three months.

If $595 sounds steep, the Citi Strata Premier at $95 a year is arguably the better all-rounder. It earns 10x on Citi Travel bookings, 3x on dining, supermarkets, gas and EV charging, hotels and airfare, has no foreign transaction fees, and throws in a $100 annual hotel credit. The welcome offer is 60,000 points after $4,000 in three months.

The boosters are both free. The Citi Double Cash earns an effective 2x points per dollar on everything (1x when you buy, 1x when you pay) — ideal for the spending that never lands in a bonus category. The Citi Strata earns 5x on Citi Travel bookings, 3x on supermarkets, transit, gas and self-select categories (think streaming, fitness, pet stores, salons), and 2x on restaurants. Both carry 3% foreign transaction fees, so leave them home when travelling abroad, and both offer solid starter bonuses (20,000 points each).

A couple of things to know before applying. Citi currently has no business card earning ThankYou points, so this is a personal-card game only. The approval rules are stricter than most issuers': one approval every eight days, two every 65 days, and each Strata product is a once-per-lifetime bonus, while the Double Cash repeats every 48 months. Points can be pooled across cards, which is what makes the two-card combos work so well.

For travellers, the practical play is simple: pick Strata Premier (or Elite if you want lounges and credits), add Double Cash for everyday spend, and you've built a flexible stash of points that can turn into American or Singapore business class instead of generic cash back. With AAdvantage now in the mix, this is one of the better points ecosystems for frequent US flyers.
