Citi ThankYou Rewards points can move to 22 airline and hotel partners, and picking the right one is the difference between a mediocre redemption and one worth several cents per point. A new deep dive from The Points Guy breaks down the ratios, the standout programs and the traps to avoid.

First, the mechanics. Points only transfer at the full 1:1 rate if you hold a premium Citi card — the Strata Elite, the Strata Premier, or the discontinued Citi Prestige. With a no-annual-fee card, most transfers happen at a lopsided 1:0.7. There's a workaround: you can pool points from multiple Citi cards into one account and transfer at 1:1 as long as one premium card is in the mix. Transfers happen on ThankYou.com in 1,000-point increments (up to 500,000 per transaction), and while most are instant, Citi says allow up to 14 days. Crucially, transfers can't be reversed, so confirm award availability before moving anything.

The standout partner is American Airlines AAdvantage. Citi is currently the only card issuer that transfers to American, and the writer behind the guide scored one-way domestic flights for 8,500 miles plus small fees — bookings that would have cost $585 in cash, or roughly 3.4 cents per mile. Note that American uses dynamic pricing, so your mileage will vary by route and date.

For Europe, Air France-KLM Flying Blue is a favourite. One recent example: a one-way Washington Dulles to Paris flight for 18,750 miles plus $33 in taxes against a $675 cash fare. Flying Blue's monthly Promo Rewards can push prices down further. If you fancy something more theatrical, Emirates Skywards lets you book fifth-freedom routes like JFK-Milan or Newark-Athens — 17,500 miles in economy or 59,000 in business — though Citi points transfer there at a reduced 1:0.8 ratio.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club is worth a look for its Qsuite business class, typically from 70,000 Avios one-way to Doha, and Qatar releases more award space to its own program than to partners. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer remains one of the few ways into the airline's famous A380 first-class suites, with a fixed award chart (rare these days) and a waitlist option; saver rates start at 32,000 miles for short-haul flights to Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club can get you from the US East Coast to London in Upper Class from 35,000 miles — but watch the taxes, which can top $600 in business class.

Why bother with any of this? TPG values ThankYou points at 1.9 cents each, but booking through Citi's travel portal caps you at about 1 cent per point, and gift cards or cash back are worse. One loyalty editor transferred 230,000 points to KrisFlyer toward a business-class trip to Singapore and Cambodia that would have cost over $10,400 in cash — around 3 cents per mile. If you hold Citi cards, a bit of planning turns everyday points into long-haul premium cabins. — The Points Guy
