The Port of Cork is closing out its 2026 cruise season on a high note: around 160,000 passenger visits across 95 calls, with the MSC Virtuosa due at the Cobh Cruise Terminal on Friday, October 16 for the final scheduled stop of the year.

Cobh did the heavy lifting, as usual. The harbour town — famous as the Titanic's last port of call — hosted 76 of the season's calls at what the port says is Ireland's only dedicated cruise berth. Ringaskiddy took 13 and Cork City Quays six. The season kicked off back on April 13 with the maiden call of AIDAluna and featured everything from big mainstream ships like Majestic Princess and MSC Preziosa to boutique vessels such as Seabourn Ovation, Le Laperouse and Spirit of Adventure. Six maiden calls landed in total, and Bantry Bay added another nine cruise visits on top.

What's more interesting for travellers than the raw numbers is where Cork wants to go next. Three partial turnaround calls were on the 2026 calendar — meaning cruises starting or ending in Cork rather than just pausing there. Paul Hegarty, the port's chief commercial officer, flagged this as the growth play: getting visitors to stay longer and explore Cork and the wider south of Ireland. That, he says, means real investment in terminal facilities, plus better rail links with Irish Rail and improved connectivity through Cork Airport. The port frames the turnaround strategy as aligned with the Irish Government's push to stretch the tourism season from St Brigid's Day in early February all the way to Halloween.

The 2027 schedule will be announced early next year, and Cobh's harbour chamber is already promising a broader range of cruise passengers next season. Colin Morehead, the chamber's president, pitches Cobh and Cork Harbour as Ireland's national gateway for cruise tourism — a place where passengers can step straight off the ship into a compact, heritage-heavy town.

For anyone who cruises, this is worth watching. A Cork turnaround port would mean you could book a cruise actually beginning in Ireland, combining a few days in Cork city, Kinsale or west Cork with a sailing afterwards. And even if you're not sailing, the pattern matters: cruise days bring a surge of visitors to Cobh's colourful seafront, the Titanic Experience and the cathedral, so timing a visit midweek outside call days makes for a calmer town. Watch this space for the 2027 schedule.
