Spending Christmas at sea used to mean skipping the traditions. Holland America Line is betting the opposite for 2026: its entire fleet gets festive decor, tree-lighting ceremonies and a full holiday programme, whether you're snorkelling in the Caribbean, sailing past Antarctic glaciers or cruising Australian waters.
The onboard line-up leans heavily on familiar rituals. Think carol singing, holiday films, crew performances and family activities, capped with a champagne-fuelled New Year's Eve party. The dining calendar is the real centrepiece: Thanksgiving dinner, Breakfast with Santa on Christmas morning, a Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve and an afternoon Nutcracker Tea. Classic plates like turkey, stuffing, latkes and eggnog sit alongside destination-inspired seasonal flavours drawn from wherever the ship happens to be sailing.
New for 2026 is a Magnolia Gingerbread Cake served in the Dining Room, an offshoot of the line's partnership with New York's Magnolia Bakery. Each ship's culinary team will also build its own elaborate gingerbread village display — worth wandering the ship just to compare designs. The bars get in on it too, with Christmas Cocoamint Coffee, Vanilla Gingerbread and Eggnog Lattes, plus cocktails like a Rudolph the Red Margarita and Minty Elf Martini.
If you're tempted, there's a spread of sailings timed around the holidays. Options include a seven-day Baja Peninsula run on Koningsdam roundtrip from San Diego departing 21 November, a 15-day Panama Canal Holiday on Zaandam from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale on 19 December, and several Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale: an 11-day Eastern Caribbean trip on Rotterdam and a 14-day Southern Caribbean sailing on Volendam, both departing 22 December, plus a seven-day Western Caribbean cruise on Eurodam on 26 December.
The pricing angle matters here. A Save on Sunshine offer cuts fares by up to 50%, and kids sail free as third and fourth guests in a stateroom on select departures — a genuine difference-maker for families priced out of peak-season holidays. Book between 13 and 21 October 2026 and you'll also get up to $200 onboard credit per stateroom and a complimentary specialty dining night on select holiday sailings.
For anyone torn between hosting the family again or doing something different this year, a holiday cruise splits the difference: the tree gets lit, the turkey gets carved, and nobody has to wash up.
