IHG's mid-tier elite status is easier to get than most people realise — and you don't need to sleep in a Holiday Inn 40 nights a year to unlock it. Platinum Elite in the IHG One Rewards programme can be earned through stays (40 qualifying nights or 60,000 qualifying points in a calendar year — award nights count), through holding a credit card, or even by simply paying for it.

The card route is the easiest. The IHG One Rewards Premier Select and IHG One Rewards Business cards from Chase both grant Platinum for as long as you hold them, and the Business card can even unlock top-tier Diamond at $50,000 of annual spend. Non-IHG cards work too: the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Reserve for Business and United Club Card all include Platinum as a perk. If cards aren't your thing, the InterContinental Ambassador programme — $225 or 45,000 points per year — bundles Platinum in with its perks at InterContinental and Six Senses properties.

So what do you actually get? The headline benefit is a 60% bonus on points earned from stays, effectively turning the usual 10 points per dollar into 16. Add room upgrades at check-in (subject to availability and hotel discretion — don't bank on a suite), a modest welcome amenity worth maybe $10, occasional 15-20% award night discount promotions, early check-in and late checkout up to 2pm when the hotel allows it, and guaranteed room availability when booking 72 hours out at what's usually a steep rate.

The honest verdict is that Platinum alone is fairly weak compared to rivals — no guaranteed late checkout, no free breakfast. The real value sits in IHG's Milestone Rewards, which kick in every 10 elite nights from 20 nights up to 100. At just 20 elite nights you can pick a confirmable suite upgrade (valid for stays up to five nights); at 40 you choose two perks, which could be an annual club lounge membership plus another suite upgrade. Those Milestone perks are where the programme gets genuinely interesting.

Who should bother? If you stay at IHG properties even a few times a year, getting Platinum via the Premier Select or Business card is a no-brainer, especially with the anniversary free night certificates. Hardcore status chasers might still be better served elsewhere — Hyatt Globalist, Hilton Diamond via the Amex Aspire, or Marriott Platinum via the Bonvoy Brilliant — since those come with stronger guaranteed benefits. But as a free rider on a card you might already hold, IHG Platinum costs you nothing and softens the edges of your stays.
