Puerto Aventuras, the gated marina resort community on the Riviera Maya south of Playa del Carmen, is dealing with an ugly local scandal. Prosecutors in Quintana Roo have arrested three people, including the town's current mayor, on charges of aggravated extortion against a business owner in the Punta Maya area.

The State Attorney General's office (FGE) identified the three as Gilberto "N", mayor of Puerto Aventuras; Karla Paola "N", an official in the municipality's Economic Development Department; and Jorge "N", the mayor's nephew. A council member was also reported among those taken into custody when the warrants were executed in Playa del Carmen on a Thursday.

According to the FGE's account, the scheme began earlier this year when staff from the mayor's office visited a business in the Puerto Maya neighbourhood and told the owner to "regularise" his status by contacting Karla Paola. When he turned up at her office on January 19 to complete paperwork and pay, he was allegedly told that failing to pay would mean his merchandise being confiscated and barred from sale. The attorney general pointed out the form in question is actually free.

It escalated from there. On February 6, six people including Jorge arrived at the shop on motorcycle taxis, saying the mayor had ordered all vendors to report or be "picked up", and threatening to beat the owner if he didn't return to the office. On February 11 he paid again, this time for a document that supposedly offered "protection" while Gilberto remained in office. Then on May 7, Jorge allegedly returned with two others and demanded weekly payments, saying he and his uncle "were the ones who make the rules in the area". The victim began paying and eventually reported it, prompting the prosecutor's office to seek and execute the arrest warrants.

The man in the mayor's chair is Gilberto Gómez Martínez, in the post since being voted in back in April 2022. Under Mexican law the suspects are identified only by first name and initial until conviction, so watch for the case to develop through the courts.

For travellers, Puerto Aventuras itself is a quiet, well-secured gated community popular with boaters and families — marinas, dolphins, golf and all-inclusive hotels along the Highway 307 corridor between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This story is about local government, not tourist safety: visitors are not targets and the arrests show state prosecutors acting on complaints. Still, it's a reminder of the extortion pressures small businesses can face in parts of Quintana Roo, and worth knowing if you spend time in the area's markets and local shops.

Who it's for: anyone planning a Riviera Maya trip who wants to keep up with what's happening behind the postcard, or long-stay visitors and digital nomads weighing up the area's local governance. Daily life in the resort zones continues as normal.
