Calgary's dog owners have a date for the calendar: Puptoberfest, the city's free fall festival for four-legged friends, runs Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — and this year it has moved to a new spot on the water.

The event now takes place at RiverWalk Plaza in East Village (632 Confluence Way SE), right along the Bow River downtown. That means fall colours, river views and an easy walk from the city centre while your dog works the crowd.

The programme is a mix of canine and human entertainment. Groomers will be offering free nail trims and 10-minute touch-up sessions through the afternoon — handy if you want your pup photo-ready. Clever Canines runs an agility course for dogs with energy to burn, artist Rob Milton draws caricatures, and DJ Ivan Rankic supplies the soundtrack. Food comes from the Family Fry Guy truck, and there are fall-themed photo ops scattered around the plaza.

The centrepiece is the dog fashion show at 2 p.m., the closing act before the festival wraps at 3 p.m. Halloween-costumed dogs parade for the crowd, so the last hour is the one to plan around if that's what you came for.

There's a charitable side too: the Calgary Humane Society, AARCS and Parachutes for Pets will all be on site with adoptable animals, so even dog-free visitors have a reason to swing by — though possibly a reason to leave with a new family member.

Attendance costs nothing and there's no registration; you just show up. If you're travelling to Calgary that weekend, it's an easy, zero-cost way to spend a Saturday morning and early afternoon, and East Village puts you within walking distance of the RiverWalk, Studio Bell and the Bow River pathways for the rest of the day.

Bring a leash, a costume if your dog tolerates one, and arrive early if you want a grooming slot before the afternoon rush.
