A well-loved safari camp on the edge of Kenya's Maasai Mara has just had a serious makeover. River Camp Mara, part of the Hemingways Collection, has completed a full interior refresh that leans hard into heritage craft and low-impact running — and it's aiming for its first Ecotourism Kenya certification on the back of it.
The camp itself has a good origin story. It was built by Richard Roberts, a third-generation conservationist, and his wife Liz, with privacy, personal service and respect for the surrounding ecosystem baked in from the start. Hemingways' renovation keeps that intimate tented-safari character rather than glossy over it. Eight tents make up the whole property — six Luxury Tents, one Family Suite and one Private Suite — so you're sharing the camp with very few other guests.
The new look is deliberately local and layered: textiles printed in Nairobi, custom furniture from Mara artisans, woven Mandalay bedspreads and vintage Istanbul rugs. CEO Ross Evans framed the thinking plainly — luxury travellers now want high-end hospitality that feels authentic, locally grounded and environmentally responsible — and the camp's operational upgrades match the decor. New solar water heating and improved waste management systems are in place as part of the push toward Ecotourism Kenya certification.
The bigger conservation picture matters too. River Camp Mara sits inside Mara North Conservancy, a multi-thousand-acre protected area whose model pays sustainable land-lease revenue to more than 1,000 local Maasai landowners while safeguarding wildlife migration corridors. Booking a stay here directly funds that arrangement — your bed night helps keep grazing land open to wildlife and income flowing to the community.
For travellers, this is a good pick if you want a classic, small-scale Kenyan safari with modern sustainability credentials rather than a big lodge experience. It also slots neatly into a wider Hemingways itinerary: the group runs Hemingways Ol Seki in the Maasai Mara, Hemingways Nairobi and the Eden Residence in the capital, beachside Hemingways Watamu on the coast, and Hemingways Retreat Kigali, its first property outside Kenya — so you could pair bush, city and beach under one brand.
Those after a first safari, a family trip (the Family Suite helps) or a private celebration in the bush will find the eight-tent format especially appealing: personal service is easier when the guest list is short, and wildlife viewing from camp stays uncrowded by design.
