Layovers just got a reason to run long. Skytrax — the aviation awards body insiders liken to the Oscars — has named its 2026 winners for "World's Best Art in the Airport," and the list reads like a layover itinerary in itself.

Houston takes the crown for the fourth consecutive year, with its two-airport system (George Bush Intercontinental and Hobby) offering Dale Chihuly's 537-piece handblown glass sculpture suspended at IAH and David Adickes' 16.5-foot "We Love Houston" at Hobby, plus live music from more than 120 musicians under the "Harmony in the Air" programme.

Singapore Changi, the most awarded airport in Skytrax history with 14 "World's Best Airport" titles, lands second. Its Kinetic Rain sculpture in Terminal 1 choreographs 1,216 copper-plated droplets, while Han Meilin's "Coming Home" statues greet arrivals at Terminal 3. Third place goes to Denver International, whose deliberately odd collection — the red-eyed "Blucifer" mustang, Leo Tanguma's apocalyptic murals, talking gargoyles at baggage claim — fed decades of alien conspiracy theories the airport now happily jokes about.

The rest of the top five lean cultural. Vancouver International showcases Coast Salish and First Nations works, including Susan Point's world's-largest spindle whorl. Bengaluru's Terminal 2, nicknamed the "Terminal in a Garden," houses a museum with 314 artworks by 103 artists guided by the classical Indian nine rasas.

Europe is represented by Amsterdam Schiphol, where Maarten Baas paints each minute in real time on a video clock, an Escher mural spans 48 feet, and the Rijksmuseum runs a free 24-hour satellite exhibit. San Diego, Chicago O'Hare, San Francisco — home to the world's only AAM-accredited airport museum — and Mumbai round out the list. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport claims the biggest haul of all: over 7,000 artefacts in its "Artbeat of New India" museum, including Naga wooden totems and Kerala masks.

For travellers, the takeaway is simple: some airports now reward an early arrival. If you're routing through Houston, Singapore, Denver, Vancouver, Bengaluru, Amsterdam, San Diego, Chicago, San Francisco or Mumbai this year, budget an extra hour before security — or a deliberately long connection — and treat the terminal as a free gallery.
