Skip the palm-tree clichés: the most relaxing city in North America, according to a new ranking, is Vancouver, British Columbia. Travel eSIM company Holafly scored the world's top 50 cities on how easy they make it to unwind, and Vancouver landed fourth globally with a score of 66.6 - the highest of any city on this continent. Ahead of it were Copenhagen, Barcelona and Vienna; Miami, the next North American entry, came in sixth.

The methodology is refreshingly practical. Holafly started with Resonance Consultancy's list of the world's 50 best cities, then measured parks and nature reserves, spa and wellness centres, air quality, annual sunshine, traffic congestion and happiness, pulling from sources like the Happy City Index and Numbeo.

Vancouver's green credentials are the obvious draw. The city counts more than 220 parks, headlined by Stanley Park - nearly 1,000 acres of waterfront trails, totem poles and an aquarium right beside downtown. VanDusen Botanical Garden adds another layer, with over 7,500 plant species, a rose garden, a sunflower meadow and a hedge maze. Air quality is consistently rated good by IQ Air, and the city logs an average of 1,932 sunshine hours a year - though timing matters, since July delivers 289 of those hours while December manages just 56.

Then there's the wellness side. Tripadvisor lists more than 310 spa and wellness options across the city, from yoga studios to full-service spas. Smile Thai Wellness Spa downtown tops the traveller rankings with a 4.8-star rating across 330-plus reviews, offering Thai massage, herbal compress treatments and reflexology. For something more upscale, the Fairmont Pacific Rim spa in Coal Harbour does hot and cold therapy plus regional treatments like the Coastal Mountain Cleanse - seaweed masque, steam and massage. The surrounding Coal Harbour waterfront is walkable and stacked with restaurants and shops, so a spa day slides easily into an evening out.

For travellers, the takeaway is that Vancouver offers a rare combination: big-city dining and hotels with immediate access to forest, ocean and mountains, plus genuinely clean air and a calm, safe feel that makes it particularly comfortable for solo trips. If summer sunshine is your priority, aim for July or August; if you'd rather trade sun for snowy mountain views and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons still deliver on the park-and-spa front. Either way, this is a city where a morning trail walk and an afternoon massage can realistically happen in the same day - no Californian sunshine required.
