Albufeira's padel courts were busier than ever this October. A two-day charity tournament in the Algarve resort town drew 184 players and raised €3,000 for the Portuguese League Against Cancer, all built around the rallying cry "Together for a cause".
The Solidarity Team Tournament, now in its second year, ran on October 10 and 11 and was organised by local club Padel4move with backing from Albufeira Council. It formed part of the Pink October campaign, the international breast cancer awareness initiative, and the funds go to the League's Southern Regional Branch.
The format leans towards camaraderie over cut-throat competition. Players competed in teams of four, with separate men's and women's categories split across skill levels, so newcomers and regulars could take part side by side. Organisers were upfront that solidarity and teamwork mattered as much as results, and the big turnout suggests that message landed.
Albufeira's councillor Maria Cristina Corado attended and praised the way sport can pull a community behind a serious cause, saying the council is proud to back initiatives that mobilise people around the fight against cancer. The tournament also has a spot on the official programme of Albufeira European City of Sport 2026, with sponsors including Designer Outlet Algarve chipping in.
For travellers, it's a nice snapshot of the Algarve beyond the beach bar. Padel has exploded across Portugal in recent years, and Albufeira is one of the towns riding that wave — clubs like Padel4move welcome visiting players, and courts are generally easy to book by the hour. If you're planning an autumn trip, keep an eye out for the next edition of the tournament; it's a low-stakes, sociable way to play while visiting, and your entry fee goes to a good cause.
October is also a smart month to be in the Algarve generally. The summer crowds have gone, sea temperatures are still pleasant, and the weather is mild enough for sport without melting. Pairing a few padel sessions with coastal walks, cheaper off-season accommodation and Albufeira's old-town restaurants makes for a genuinely good shoulder-season break — and if you time it right, you can play for charity while you're at it.
