Florida's sunshine comes at a price. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis put the state's overall prices roughly 3.4% above the national average in 2024, a tough sell for anyone on a fixed income. Georgia, by contrast, runs about 3.6% below average, and Houston County in the middle of the state is emerging as a genuinely appealing alternative for retirees who want warmth, water and community without the coastal price tag.
The county's cities are growing fast, which tells you something. Warner Robins, the largest, had an estimated 87,761 residents in 2025, up more than 9% since 2020. Perry and Centerville have grown even quicker, adding roughly 25% and 16% of new residents respectively in five years. Growth means new restaurants, shops and services, but the towns keep a small-city feel.
Water is the surprise here for a landlocked county. Houston Lake, about five miles from Perry, has a fishing dock and a boat ramp, and locals say the sunset over the dam is the best view of the day. For proper angling, Lonice C. Barrett Lake at the Flat Creek Public Fishing Area near Perry stocks largemouth bass and channel catfish, with an accessible fishing pier if you don't own a boat. Pack bug spray, though, as mosquitoes are a known feature. Lake Blackshear, with more boating and fishing, sits just under an hour south.
Free and cheap entertainment is the county's other selling point. The Museum of Aviation near Robins Air Force Base charges nothing for admission or parking and houses an impressive collection of historic military aircraft, though reviewers warn there's a lot of walking involved. Social life is organised too: Warner Robins Parks and Recreation runs line dancing, mahjong, quilting and water aerobics for anyone 50 and over, while the North Houston Sports Complex offers an indoor track for a dollar and fitness classes for three. In Perry, the James E. Worrall Center hosts senior exercise classes, square dancing and bingo.
Perry's calendar stays busy with the Georgia National Fair each October, complete with livestock shows, food vendors and concerts, plus discounted gate tickets for visitors 60 and over. The Downtown Perry Farmers Market runs every Saturday year-round, and Warner Robins hosts a free Middle Georgia Literary Festival each February.
For travellers weighing a retirement move or an extended stay in the South, Houston County makes a strong case: below-average costs, lakes on your doorstep, and a ready-made social scene for over-50s. It may not have a beach, but it has a lot going for it.
