Skip the crowds of the Twin Cities' better-known lakes. Less than an hour's drive from Minneapolis, Lake Rebecca Park Reserve spreads across 2,577 acres on the lake's northern shore, with a 254-acre body of water at its centre — and on many trails, you may not see another person at all.
The water is the calm kind by design: gas motors are banned, so the northwest-shore boat launch is for electric or non-motorised craft only. Anglers can fish from a boat or either of two piers, with largemouth bass, panfish and walleye on the species list. You'll need a boat trailer pass before you arrive.
On land, the trail network is the real draw. An easy 4.3-mile loop circles the lake on mostly paved surface with boardwalk sections and good tree cover — about two hours at a relaxed pace, with a modest 177 feet of climbing. Mountain bikers get a 13.7-mile singletrack trail rated moderate, winding through wetlands, grassland and lakeside stretches with up to 629 feet of elevation; riders report turtles, deer and trumpeter swans along the way. There's also a 9.5-mile paved multi-use trail and 7.8 miles of easy, unpaved horse trail shared with hikers and dogs. When snow arrives, many of these routes convert to cross-country ski tracks.
Camping works differently here: there are no individual or RV sites, only two group campgrounds, both pet-friendly and open roughly May to September depending on weather. Sarah Creek, northeast of the lake, takes parties of up to 80 with horse hitches for equestrian campers, plus drinking water, vault toilets, fire pits and picnic tables, capped at 30 vehicles. The South campground, on the lake's south side, sleeps up to 50 with similar primitive setups, a picnic shelter and a horseshoe pit. If you can't rustle up a big enough crew, it still works as a day trip from Minneapolis.
For locals, it's an easy, low-cost way to get a genuine wilderness feel without a long drive. For visitors, it pairs well with other regional parks near Minneapolis — Lake Minnewashta Regional Park, with its own trails, swimming and boating, is a sensible add-on.
