Maldivian hospitality had a strong showing at this year's South Asian Travel Awards, with several names taking home top honours — and a couple of the winners are well worth knowing about if you're planning an Indian Ocean trip.
The biggest wellness story is ELE|NA, named Leading Wellness and Spa Brand at SATA 2026. The Maldives-based brand runs spa and wellness operations across a portfolio of resort partners, built around a 'Wellness Your Way' philosophy and six so-called Pillars of Vitality covering treatments, fitness, emotional wellbeing, sleep and nutrition. In practical terms, that means guests at partner resorts get programmes tailored to the island they're on rather than a cookie-cutter spa menu. Every ELE|NA property in the Maldives holds Platinum Sustainable Wellness Accreditation, and the brand trains its own therapists through an in-house academy. It's also expanding into India and Nepal, so expect the name to crop up further afield.
Also collecting double honours at SATA was Atmosphere Core, which took both Leading Resort/Hotel Brand and Leading Hospitality Development Company. Managing director Salil Panigrahi credited the group's teams and partners, and the award caps a busy stretch — the company recently opened its first European property, BORGO MONCHIERO HERITAGE by Atmosphere, in Italy.
For luxury travellers, the most relevant win may come from a different ceremony altogether. Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives was named Best Luxury Resort at the 15th Asia Hotel Awards 2026, a notable result for a resort that only opened in April 2025. Set in The Atollia development in North Malé Atoll, it has 142 beachfront and overwater villas and residences, including two- and three-bedroom options with private pools and Jacuzzis. Cluster general manager Jorge Fernandez says the concept was built around the lagoon itself rather than scale — worth factoring in if you're comparing newer Maldivian openings.
Rounding out the awards haul, JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La picked up Leading Business Hotel and Leading City Hotel (40 Rooms and Above) at SATA. It's a useful reminder that the Maldives isn't only about overwater villas: the capital Malé has solid urban hotels for business travellers or anyone spending a night before a seaplane or domestic flight transfer.
Why does any of this matter if you're not an industry insider? Awards like SATA and the Asia Hotel Awards are a reasonable shorthand for consistent service quality, and they highlight properties and brands that are actively investing — in training, sustainability and new concepts. If wellness is central to your holiday, ELE|NA's footprint across multiple Maldivian resorts makes it an easy filter when shortlisting. And Centara Grand Lagoon's rapid award success suggests the newest wave of Maldivian luxury resorts is already competitive with established names.
