Orlando already has more water parks than almost anywhere in America — Volcano Bay, Aquatica, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, Legoland's splash zone, Discovery Cove. Now a toy company wants in. Mattel, the brand behind Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and Thomas & Friends, is building Mattel Wonder Indoor Water Park, with Orlando slated as one of the first locations in a planned five-park chain across North America.
The project was first announced in November 2025, with early reports pointing to a 2028 Orlando debut. Since then, the order of play has shifted: a Mattel Wonder park in Bellevue, Nebraska is now pencilled in to open first, in late 2027. Concept art for the Nebraska site shows a Barbie-themed activity pool, but Mattel has told the Orlando Business Journal that the Florida park won't necessarily copy that blueprint. The Orlando location still has no confirmed opening date.
What makes the Orlando site interesting is the design. Plans call for a retractable roof, so the park can stay indoor-and-weatherproof while still letting sunshine in on Florida's good days. That's a genuinely useful feature here — despite the Sunshine State's reputation, Orlando gets hammered by summer storms, averaging roughly 7 to 8 inches of rain a month from June through August. A covered park means your water-park day doesn't get washed out.
It's not just slides, either. Updated plans include a separate 45,000-square-foot family entertainment centre building, though Mattel hasn't revealed what will fill it. There's also experiential retail on the cards — think shops built around photo opportunities and activities rather than plain shopping. Given how successfully the 2023 Barbie film boosted Mattel's licensing business, and with a Masters of the Universe film arriving in 2026, the company clearly sees physical experiences as its next growth area.
For families planning an Orlando holiday, the location is the real hook. The park is set for 15845 State Road 535, about a 30-minute drive southwest of Orlando International Airport and — more importantly — just 12 minutes from Walt Disney World. That puts it firmly in the resort corridor, easy to bolt onto a theme-park trip as a non-park day, or as a backup plan when afternoon thunderstorms roll in.
Who should care? Families with young kids who know Hot Wheels from Barbie, travellers who like the idea of a water park that works rain or shine, and anyone who's already done the big Orlando parks and fancies something new by the time it opens. Just keep an eye on announcements — with no confirmed date yet, this is one to bookmark rather than book around.
