Florida has company. On the western shore of Cape Cod, in the town of Falmouth, Massachusetts, Old Silver Beach keeps winning over travellers with a combination you rarely find on the East Coast: powdery-soft sand, calm shallow water, and west-facing sunsets over Buzzard's Bay.
The accolades are real. The beach has repeatedly taken gold for best beach and best sunset views in Cape Cod Life's Best of Cape Cod reader's choice awards, and Condé Nast Traveler has counted it among the Cape's best. It sits about 70 miles south of Boston Logan International Airport, in a beach town directly across the water from Martha's Vineyard. Most East Coast beaches face east, so the west-facing orientation is what makes the evening light shows so special — arrive in the morning, stay for the twilight.
The beach is split into two sections by Herring Brook, one reserved for residents and one for visitors, with a salt marsh between them that shelters shoreline birds, shellfish and herons, egrets and ospreys overhead. Each spring, the brook's namesake herring shimmer upstream on their migration to the bay. Families like it here because the water is fairly shallow and calm, with dunes and tide pools for kids to explore. The sand itself gets specific praise — while much of the Cape has coarse, hard-going sand, reviewers consistently call Old Silver's remarkably soft and easy to walk on.
Practicalities matter, because this beach draws a crowd. Non-resident parking runs about $30, and Tripadvisor regulars suggest arriving early. Restrooms, showers and lifeguards operate only from late June through Labor Day. Food is sorted too: in summer the Beachside Blends food truck serves smoothies, bowls and fresh juices, while Buzzard's Bay Pizza Co. and Captain Scoops handle pizza and ice cream duty. At the north end, Sea Crest Beach Resort offers rooms and several restaurants — the Lantern Room does a breakfast buffet plus Falmouth oysters, lobster rolls and clam chowder, and the Hatch does grab-and-go fish and chips and burgers for the sand.
One warning for anyone driving from Boston: summer traffic on the two-lane routes to the Cape can turn an hour-long off-season drive into an ordeal. The Cape Cod Chamber advises avoiding Fridays between 2 and 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and return trips on Sundays or holiday Mondays between 1 and 9 p.m. Travelling outside those windows makes the whole trip far more pleasant.
Who is this for? Families wanting safe, gentle water and walkable sand; couples chasing a proper East Coast sunset without a flight to Florida; and anyone pairing a beach day with Falmouth's restaurants or a side trip toward Martha's Vineyard or the fishing and boating spots along the Cape Cod Canal. If your image of Cape Cod beaches is rough sand and chilly crowds, Old Silver is the one that breaks the stereotype.
