Horse racing usually means an afternoon at the track, but Abu Dhabi Turf Club is flipping the format. From October 22, the venue is running Sunset at the Turf, an after-work racing evening on selected Thursdays through the 2026-2027 season, with races timed to unfold against the sunset.
The setup is simple: seven races per evening, the first at 5pm and then one every half hour until 8pm. Five are Purebred Arabian races — the breed the UAE is famous for — plus two Thoroughbred contests. Premier Admission gets you into the garden overlooking the track and the finish line, which is pitched squarely at the after-work crowd: bring a plus-one, round up colleagues, pick a horse and shout it home.
There's a free game to add some stakes without spending extra. Pick and Win asks you to predict race winners, with prizes on offer for those who call it right. General admission starts at just Dhs10, while Premier Admission is from Dhs80 — cheap enough to make it a regular Thursday habit rather than a special occasion. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
This season carries extra weight. It's the Golden Jubilee season, marking 50 years since the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan established the club's equestrian heritage in 1976. Two big dates sit alongside the Thursday series: the UAE President Cup on December 12, 2026, and the Abu Dhabi Gold Cup on February 7, 2027. If you're planning a winter trip to the capital, either would make a memorable addition to the itinerary.
The club sits on Mubarak Bin Mohammed Street in Al Mushrif, a central neighbourhood that's easy to reach from most of the city. Early finish at 8pm means you can still carry on to dinner afterwards, or make the racing itself the main event and be home at a reasonable hour.
Why it matters for travellers: racing evenings like this offer a slice of Emirati culture that most visitors never see, at a fraction of the cost of the big Dubai extravaganzas. For Dhs80 you get a garden seat by the finish line, seven races and a sunset — a genuinely local way to spend a Thursday in the capital.
