The Algarve's flagship marina has picked up another trophy. Vilamoura Marina was named Superyacht Marina of the Year 2026 by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA), with the award handed over on September 23 at the Southampton International Boat Show, one of the recreational boating industry's biggest annual gatherings.
The TYHA prizes are open to marinas accredited under its Gold Anchor scheme, and the superyacht category is decided by customer votes — meaning the people actually berthing and crewing yachts there rated it top of the class. For a resort town on Portugal's southern coast, that kind of word-of-mouth endorsement carries weight.
It's not a one-off either. Vilamoura has been collecting international recognition since 2015, and in 2023 it reached the top of the Gold Anchor programme with 5 Gold Anchors Platinum status — an accreditation the marina says only 11 marinas worldwide currently hold. CEO Isolete Correia called the new distinction a source of pride for the whole team and a recognition of the daily push for excellence, adding that it will spur the marina to keep raising its standards.
For travellers, the marina is far more than a car park for boats. It sits at the heart of Vilamoura, ringed by restaurants, hotels, shops and nightlife, and has long been one of the resort's main draws. You don't need to own a superyacht to enjoy it — the waterfront promenade, charter options, boat trips and people-watching are all open to everyone, and the marina is a genuine factor in pulling international visitors to this stretch of the Algarve.
Why it matters: award recognition like this tends to follow investment in berthing, services and shore-side facilities, which in practice means a smarter, more polished waterfront for casual visitors too. If Vilamoura was already on your Algarve shortlist for golf courses and beaches, the marina now gives it an extra claim as the region's premium nautical hub.
