If a festive city break is on your wishlist, where you book matters more than you might think. New research from TravelSupermarket has ranked Europe's best-value Christmas market destinations for 2026, and Poland's capital comes out on top.

Warsaw takes the crown with an average December stay of £110 per person per night. The city has become a serious draw for its seasonal markets without the eye-watering price tags of Alpine neighbours — partly because Poland still uses the Złoty rather than the Euro, which keeps costs down for British travellers.

Barcelona is the surprise runner-up at £112 a night, home to traditional markets like Fira de Santa Llúcia and Fira de Reis de la Gran Via. Fair warning, though: expect daytime highs around 20°C in November rather than snow — more mulled-sangria weather than glühwein. Dublin follows at £128, with Venice at £130 — meaning the festive period may actually be the smartest time to see some of Europe's notoriously expensive cities.

The rest of the top ten is a solid hit list of classic market destinations: Krakow (£131), Budapest (£133), Berlin and Hamburg (both £134), Rome (£135) and Lisbon (£142).

The spread at the top and bottom of the list is significant. TravelSupermarket's Chris Webber points out that Vienna averages more than double Warsaw's price — a couple opting for three nights in the Polish capital could have over £700 extra to spend at the stalls. Even within one country, savings add up: Barcelona runs roughly £53 a night cheaper than Madrid.

For anyone planning a December getaway, the takeaway is simple: a big-name Christmas market trip doesn't have to mean a big-name bill. Warsaw and Krakow offer some of Europe's most atmospheric markets at the lowest prices, while Barcelona proves you can combine markets with mild winter sunshine. Booking early and comparing destinations before committing can easily save the cost of a few extra gifts — or a very good dinner.
