San Pedro's community spirit got a concrete number attached to it this month. On September 5, the San Pedro Community Blood Drive Group set up at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, and 29 people from around Ambergris Caye showed up to give blood. Seventeen pints were collected — enough, by the group's estimate, to help save more than 50 lives.

The letter of thanks, published in The San Pedro Sun by group co-coordinator Ashty Dennison, also tallied the smaller logistics that make these events work. A parallel "Dollar Drive" raised $734 BZD to offset costs, and the sponsor list reads like a roll call of the town's best-known names: Ramon's Village Beach Resort, Estel's Dine by the Sea, El Charro Buffet, the San Pedro Lions Club, the Town Council, water taxi operator San Pedro Belize Express, and local airline Tropic Air, among roughly a dozen others.

The blood itself was collected by a three-person team from Belize National Transfusion Services — Nurse Doreen Madrill, Mabel Rodriguez and Erinn Walford — who made the trip out from Belize City.

For anyone on or near the island, the practical takeaway is the date: the next blood drive is set for Saturday, December 5, again at the Polyclinic. The group is also publicising a WhatsApp line for blood emergencies, +501 615 4300, and posts updates on Facebook as the San Pedro Community Blood Drive Group.

Why should a traveller care? Ambergris Caye is Belize's most visited island, and most visitors never think about what happens if they or a travelling companion need blood. Small islands can't stockpile much — donations collected locally, backed by the national transfusion service on the mainland, are the system. Knowing the polyclinic exists, that it hosts regular drives, and that there's a direct number to call in an emergency is genuinely useful information for anyone planning a dive trip, honeymoon or family holiday on the cay. And if you happen to be there on December 5 and meet the eligibility rules, donating an hour of your holiday is about as meaningful a souvenir as you can take home.
