American Express looks set to tighten one of the most-used perks on its Platinum card. According to language spotted on Amex's test website by a forum member with a track record of accurate finds, from 1 January 2027 bookings made through Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) would need a minimum of two nights to qualify for the card's $300 semi-annual hotel credit — $600 across the year. Right now, a single night is enough.
The change wouldn't be entirely new territory. Amex's other premium hotel programme, The Hotel Collection, already imposes a two-night minimum. And the idea isn't fresh either: the author of the View from the Wing piece says he heard whispers of exactly this plan back in October 2022, and specifically asked Amex during the September 2025 Platinum refresh whether one-night FHR stays would still count. At that point they confirmed they would. The test-site copy also suggests the credit gets rebranded as a "Lodging Credit" and extended to Airbnb Luxe bookings — private islands, castles and the like — alongside a reported new $250 annual Airbnb Experiences credit that apparently requires a Luxe booking first.
Why would Amex do this? Simple maths. The cardmaker earns a commission (around 20%) on hotel bookings, which offsets the statement credit it pays out. A $400 one-night stay earns Amex roughly $80 in commission against a $300 credit — a big net cost. Stretch that to two nights and the commission roughly doubles to $160, covering more than half the payout. With cardmember services costs up 50% in the second quarter thanks to the generous Platinum refresh, trimming the bleed makes sense.
And the refreshed Platinum has been a hit. Amex says it's now their fastest-growing US consumer card, with FHR and Hotel Collection spending up 50% year on year. Strong uptake, though, means strong costs — and this is one lever to pull.
Important caveats: test-site language can change before launch, get delayed, or never ship at all. The reporter notes an October or November 2025 announcement was the expected window, but nothing is confirmed. Also, the reported rule affects only the statement credit. A one-night FHR booking would presumably still come with the programme's perks — daily breakfast for two, a property credit, and guaranteed 4pm late checkout — it just wouldn't trigger the money back.
For cardholders, the practical effect is real. At a $400-a-night hotel, you'd currently need to spend only $100 net out of pocket to burn through the $300 credit; under a two-night rule, that jumps to $500. If you tend to book quick one-night FHR splurges — an airport hotel before an early flight, a single luxe night on a road trip — the clock is ticking on that pattern. Anyone with stays booked for 2026 under current rules should be fine, and if you're eyeing the card mainly for the hotel credit, the next year or so is the window to use it the old way. Watch for an official announcement before assuming anything.
