American Express has made it official: from 1 January 2027, bookings made through Fine Hotels & Resorts will need a minimum two-night stay to qualify for the Platinum card's $300 lodging credit. That applies to both the personal and Business Platinum cards in the US, and the change is now live in Amex's published benefit terms.
Until now, FHR was the loophole. The cheaper Hotel Collection already demanded two nights, but a single night at an FHR property — which typically comes with breakfast, a property credit and a guaranteed 4pm checkout — was enough to trigger the credit. From 2027, one-night stays still get those FHR perks, but they won't earn the statement credit. The credit itself stays the same shape: up to $300 for January to June, and another $300 for July to December, on prepaid bookings. Amex's FAQ suggests the credit period follows the date the charge is processed, so a one-night stay prepaid in 2026 for travel in 2027 would likely still work under the old rules.
The bigger structural change is that the benefit is being renamed a Lodging Credit and stretched to cover Airbnb. Prepaid Airbnb Luxe bookings made through Amex Travel will count towards the credit — though again, two-night minimums apply. On top of that, cardholders get up to $250 per calendar year in Airbnb Experiences statement credits. There's a catch: you have to first complete a qualifying prepaid Luxe booking through Amex Travel, and only then can you spend the Experiences credit with Airbnb directly for the rest of that calendar year. Cancel the Luxe booking and the Experiences credits can be clawed back. Realistically, that's a perk for a narrow slice of cardholders rather than a headline benefit.
Why is Amex doing this? Simple maths. A one-night $400 booking might earn Amex around $80 in commission, while a two-night $800 stay earns roughly $160 — meaning the credit costs Amex far less to fund. And if some cardholders simply give up on using the credit because finding a two-night stay is inconvenient, that's pure breakage in Amex's favour.
The context matters. Amex gave the Platinum card a major refresh in September 2025, and at the time the issuer confirmed one-night FHR stays would still qualify. That promise now has an expiry date. The refresh has been popular — people will always claim what is essentially free money — but the amount Amex is paying out is enormous, and tweaks like this are how it manages the economics afterwards.
For travellers who habitually book two-night FHR stays, nothing changes. For those who liked dipping into a single luxury night twice a year, the value of the card just shrank a little. If you have a one-nighter in mind, booking and prepaying before the end of 2026 looks like the safest way to keep the current terms.
