IHG's loyalty scheme quietly has one of the more generous perk systems among the big hotel programs. Called Milestone Rewards, it hands you a pick of extra benefits every time you hit another 10 elite night credits in a calendar year, starting at 20 nights and running all the way to 100. The rewards are separate from your standard elite status perks, so even top-tier Diamond members can stack more on top.

The menu at each threshold includes confirmed suite upgrades, an annual club lounge membership, food and beverage vouchers, or bonus points. At the 40-night mark you pick two perks, and at 70 nights you pick two again — which is where the program gets interesting, since 70 nights is also what Diamond status requires. Do that in a year and choose well, and you could end up with four confirmable suite upgrades, a full year of club lounge access for you plus a guest, and a stack of dining vouchers worth a few hundred dollars.

Here's the part many members miss: you don't need to sleep in a hotel 70 times to get there. Award nights count, and IHG's US co-branded credit cards add elite night credits that stack across cards. The $350 Premier Select card alone gives 20 nights a year (plus two more per $5,000 spent), the $150 Premier and $200 Business cards give 15 each, and even the no-fee card gives five. Holding two cards could add 35 credits to your total before you check in anywhere.

Timing matters when you choose. Suite upgrades and food and beverage credits are valid for 12 months from the date they're issued, so it's smart to delay claiming them until late in the year. Lounge memberships and bonus points, by contrast, can be grabbed straight away with no downside.

A few practical notes on the headline perks. Suite upgrades cover stays of up to five nights on eligible cash rates or points bookings, must be arranged by phone between 14 days and one day before arrival, and don't work at select brands or on OTA bookings. The annual lounge membership works on unlimited stays, cash or points, at nearly any IHG property with a club lounge — including InterContinentals. As for points versus dining credits, the vouchers usually win: $100 in credits is typically worth more than 10,000 points.

Who should care? Frequent IHG guests, obviously, but also anyone who can manufacture night credits with credit cards and wants lounge access or suite confirmations without chasing status the hard way. If your travel pattern includes properties with club lounges, the annual membership at 40 nights is arguably the best value pick in the entire program. Just remember that rollover nights from the previous year don't count toward milestones — it's a use-it-this-year system.
