A quiet stretch of the Dominican Republic's northeastern coast has quietly turned into one of the Caribbean's busiest resort development stories. Miches, about 90 minutes by road from Punta Cana International Airport, now has enough big-brand hotels that the real question is no longer 'where is it?' but 'which one do I book?'

The setting explains the rush. Playa Esmeralda is the headline beach — golden sand, palms and green mountains in the background, with far less development than the established corridors further south. Landing at Punta Cana still gets you an easy international gateway; the drive becomes part of the trip.

Hyatt made the biggest splash with two neighbouring all-inclusives on Playa Esmeralda. Secrets Playa Esmeralda opened in August 2025 with 500 suites aimed at adults, including swim-out options and private terraces. Dreams Playa Esmeralda followed a month later with another 500 rooms, a waterpark and kids' and teens' clubs for families. The pair share a Public Square area with dining, shopping and entertainment, so couples and families can holiday side by side.

Hilton's Zemi Miches, a Curio Collection all-inclusive, pushed accommodation further upmarket in June 2026 with 16 oceanfront bungalows — private plunge pools, oversized soaking tubs and direct beach access, in studio and two-bedroom layouts with Club Azure perks. Ignore the 'Punta Cana' in its name; it sits in Miches.

The wider roster already includes Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, which put the area on the map back in 2019 with its four-village concept, plus Viva Miches by Wyndham and the family-friendly Marriott Miches Beach with four restaurants, two pools, a spa and Bonvoy points. If hotel loyalty programmes factor into your bookings, Miches now lets you collect in more than one direction.

The next milestone: Four Seasons chose Miches for its first Dominican Republic property. The Resort and Residences at Tropicalia is slated for mid-2027 with just 95 rooms, 21 suites, 25 residences, eight restaurants and lounges, three pools, a spa and farm experiences at La Querencia. It's a smaller, quieter format than the mega-all-inclusives — a sign the destination intends to cover both ends of the market.

Don't treat Miches as a stay-put resort town. Montaña Redonda's mountaintop swings look out over the coastline and lagoons, Laguna Redonda and cocoa farm visits are close by, and Los Haitises National Park makes a rewarding mangrove-and-limestone excursion. Winter visitors can add seasonal whale-watching.

Who it suits: anyone who wants big-resort amenities without Punta Cana's density — couples on an adults-only trip, families chasing water slides, or travellers who'd rather trade one beach afternoon for a mountain panorama. With the Four Seasons still ahead, the resort line-up will only deepen from here.
