A town of roughly 3,700 people on the Little Elkhart River has just been ranked sixth on USA Today's list of the Best Small Towns in the Midwest for 2026. Middlebury sits in Elkhart County, deep in Indiana's Amish Country, and it has quietly built a reputation as a friendly, low-key escape from the region's bigger cities.
Incorporated back in 1868, Middlebury is the kind of place where independent businesses anchor the main street. Joyfully Said, a couple-run shop selling handmade decor, started as a garage hobby and became a local fixture. Vintage hunters head to The Barn Door, an antiques store full of repurposed furniture and seasonal pieces. The biggest draw is the Essenhaus Village Shops, a cluster of gift outlets set in old homestead buildings, selling everything from jewellery to toys.
The Essenhaus complex doubles as a resort, with an inn and the family-run Das Dutchman Essenhaus, the largest family-style restaurant in Indiana. It pulls in close to a million visitors a year for Amish-style buffets and passed-platter dinners. If you'd rather skip the crowds, options include West on Warren for American classics, Danny's Diner for scratch-made pizza, and — a short drive away in Goshen — the South Side Soda Shop, a 1950s diner known for award-winning chilli.
The outdoors is half the reason to come. The Pumpkinvine Nature Trail runs 17 miles from Shipshewana, home to one of America's largest Amish communities, through Middlebury to Goshen, and links with three other regional routes for 25 miles of connected trail. En route you pass the Krider "World's Fair" Garden Park, a 2.4-acre garden designed for the 1934 Chicago World's Fair, complete with a fountain, reflecting pool and a Quilt Garden. It's a short walk from Riverbend Park, 45 acres along the river with fishing, courts and birdwatching — and the venue for the annual Riverfest, with its boat race and live animal show.
Time your trip around the calendar of town festivals if you can. June brings the Middlebury Summer Festival, with live music, food stalls and one of Indiana's biggest festival parades. September's Fall Festival adds homemade food and an evening fireworks display.
Why it matters: Middlebury works as an easy add-on to a broader Northern Indiana loop. South Bend is about 30 miles away and Fort Wayne roughly 60, and nearby Shipshewana, Goshen and Elkhart each add their own flavour. You'll want a car to make the most of the area, but distances are short and the Amish-country scenery makes the drives worthwhile. It suits travellers who like small-town pacing, hearty food and flat, pleasant cycling and walking routes over big-city itineraries.
