St Martin packs a lot of hotel choice into half an island, and a new ranking from Caribbean Journal sorts the best of the French side into five clear picks — from a $250-a-night beachfront bargain to Belmond-level luxury.

Taking the top spot is Grand Case Beach Club, named best overall and best value. Its appeal is practical: two beaches (Grand Case Bay and Petite Plage), apartment-style rooms with kitchens, one-bedroom suites around 600 square feet, and a short walk to the village's famous restaurant strip. Seasonal studio rates start at roughly $250 a night, and a newer rooftop spot, the Moonrise Bar & Lounge, adds a sunset perch above the water. For families and longer stays, it's hard to beat.

The luxury slot goes to La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel on Baie Longue in Terres Basses, with a long pale-sand beach, ocean-view rooms and multi-bedroom villas, plus three dining venues — L'Oursin for dressier evenings, casual Laplaj and the wine-room La Cave. Note the timing: the resort reopens for the season on November 15.

Two picks sit in French Cul-de-Sac, the jumping-off point for Pinel Island. Le Martin is a six-room boutique hideaway with individually named rooms, a connecting family option and included breakfast — best with a rental car, since it isn't on a swimming beach. Karibuni Boutique Hotel is the more distinctive bet: sea-view suites (some with private plunge pools), guests aged 12 and up, and its own boat transfer to Pinel, where the hotel runs a restaurant and beach bar. One CJ editor chose it for her honeymoon.

Rounding out the list is Le Temps des Cerises in Grand Case, an eight-room hotel, restaurant and beach club directly on the sand, with bay-facing terraces and a sociable, DJ-fuelled beach-club atmosphere.

The useful logic behind the ranking: match the hotel to your holiday style. Village dinners and beach variety point to Grand Case; resort-centred beach days to Baie Longue; repeated Pinel trips to Cul-de-Sac. Getting there is straightforward — Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side serves nonstop flights from Miami, New York, Atlanta, Boston and Charlotte, with Southwest recently adding Orlando and Baltimore routes.
