WestJet is quietly redrawing its US map, and two dots are about to disappear. The Canadian carrier has ended its Kauai service for good and is reportedly weighing a full exit from Orange County, California — changes that matter if you're a snowbird planning a winter escape.
The Kauai cut is the bigger loss for Canadian travellers. WestJet first connected the Garden Island to the mainland in December 2009, running seasonal winter flights from Vancouver to Lihue with Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 737-800s, plus a brief weekly Calgary rotation during the 2021-22 winter. Its last scheduled flight landed on April 12, 2026, and the airline has confirmed it won't return for the 2026-27 season. That leaves Kauai with zero nonstop flights to Canada — Canadians wanting to visit will now need to connect through Honolulu or another island.
Hawaii fans shouldn't panic entirely, though. WestJet is keeping three Hawaiian airports on its winter schedule. Honolulu gets the most coverage: daily flights from Vancouver, three weekly from Calgary, and up to one weekly from Edmonton. Maui's Kahului is similarly well served — eight weekly from Vancouver, three from Calgary, and one from Edmonton. Kona on the Big Island runs twice weekly from both Vancouver and Calgary.
The other domino is John Wayne Airport in Orange County. WestJet currently flies there twice a week from Calgary (Thursdays and Sundays) but sources suggest it could withdraw by the end of March 2027, possibly sooner. The airline has been in and out of the market since 2011, dropping and restoring its Calgary link along the way. If WestJet goes, Air Canada's daily Vancouver service would become the only nonstop connection between Orange County and Canada. John Wayne operates under strict capacity limits, with airlines assigned a set number of average daily departures — WestJet's allocation was about 2.3 for 2027, which could be redistributed to rivals.
Despite the trims, the US remains a core WestJet market. The airline has pencilled in around 6,325 flights to the US this winter, over a million seats, with more than 50 departures on peak days. Phoenix leads the pack with over 1,000 scheduled flights — capacity there is up roughly 27.5% year on year — followed by Las Vegas, Palm Springs, and Los Angeles.
What it means for you: if Kauai was on your winter shortlist, book through Honolulu or Maui and island-hop, or fly via a US hub with a US carrier. If you're in Orange County or Southern California, watch the next WestJet schedule update before committing — and note that Air Canada still has you covered nonstop to Vancouver in the meantime. The wider takeaway is that WestJet is consolidating toward its desert strongholds, so Arizona and Nevada routes look safest for the season ahead.
