Belize is having a quieter year than its tourism ministry would like, but it is betting on new airlift to turn things around before the peak season kicks off in mid-November.
Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler confirmed on September 15 that overnight arrivals dipped between June and August, with June down 5% compared to the same month a year earlier. The first five months of 2026 had actually been strong, he noted, but the summer stretch turned soft — August especially. That lull is being felt on the ground in San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, where some beachfront restaurants have temporarily closed and downtown businesses report thinner sales. One local owner summed it up bluntly: things are slow, and everyone is just trying to stay afloat until the season turns.
The ministry's answer is capacity. Six new flights are scheduled for the coming high season. BermudAir is expected to launch nonstop service to Belize from several US cities, including Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Raleigh-Durham and Boston, while United Airlines plans to boost frequencies from San Francisco, Chicago and Denver. On top of that, the government — with Prime Minister John Briceño personally involved — is working to secure a direct flight from Europe, which would be a significant milestone for a country that has historically relied almost entirely on the North American market.
There is also a longer-term play: sports tourism. Mahler pointed to the numbers to make his case — global tourism is worth roughly $12–13 trillion, sports around $2.5 trillion, and sports tourism alone about $1 trillion. His plan is to upgrade Belize's facilities so the country can host more sporting events during the slower months, smoothing out the boom-and-bust rhythm of the traditional season.
For travellers, the timing matters. Belize's high season runs from December through April, when the weather is driest and the barrier reef, cayes and jungle lodges are at their busiest. If you can travel in November or late April into May, you will often find lower rates and emptier beaches — and, as this year shows, businesses that genuinely welcome the company. More flight options from cities like Boston, Denver and San Francisco should also make the country easier and potentially cheaper to reach without a connection through Miami or Houston.
Keep an eye on the European route announcement. If it materialises, it would open Belize up to UK and continental travellers who currently face two-stop itineraries. In the meantime, San Pedro's dive shops, taco stands and sunset bars are open for business — and a visit during the shoulder months does an island good.
