A free night out in Calgary sounds almost too good, but Contemporary Calgary runs one every month. Its Free First Thursday programme keeps the gallery open late — 5 to 9 p.m. — on the first Thursday of each month, with no admission charge and a rotating lineup of performances and activities.
The November edition lands on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, and this time it's teaming up with Springboard Performance as part of Fluid Fest, the city's contemporary dance festival. The evening, called Silvering: In Community, spreads dance performances, workshops and interactive experiences across the gallery. Expect movement sessions including Taiji Qigong and seated ballet, plus interactive art built around themes of memory and connection. There's free popcorn too, and a bar if you want to buy a drink.
The venue itself is half the draw. Contemporary Calgary sits in the city's former Centennial Planetarium at 701 11th St. SW, a distinctive mid-century building now filled with rotating exhibitions from local and international artists. The gallery runs education programmes, performances and festivals with a stated mission of keeping art accessible — which is exactly what these monthly evenings are for.
If you can't make November, the last Free First Thursday of 2026 runs on Dec. 3. There's a gap in January 2027, then the monthly schedule picks up again in February.
One practical note: admission is free, but the gallery asks visitors to register online in advance to lock in a spot. It's a small step that guarantees entry at a popular after-hours event.
For travellers, this is an easy win. Calgary trips often fill up with Banff day-trip planning, and a zero-cost evening of contemporary art and live dance in a converted planetarium is a nice way to ground a visit in the city itself. Pair it with dinner in the Beltline neighbourhood, which is walkable from the gallery, and you've got a solid cheap night out.
