Dubai has a reputation for big-ticket attractions, but some of the best family days out here are cheap, cheerful or downright weird — smash a printer, throw a pot, kayak a mountain lake. Here's what's on the table for families visiting or living in the city.

Start with teamwork. Escape rooms work brilliantly for mixed-age groups, and Dubai has no shortage: Game Over runs branches at Palm Jumeirah Mall and Dubai Festival City Mall, while NoWayOut and Phobia Dubai in JLT offer themed rooms from mystery adventures to prison breaks. Best suited to older children and teens, and guaranteed post-game arguments about who cracked the final clue.

If golf sounds more your speed, Topgolf Dubai at Emirates Golf Club does interactive range games with food and music for all skill levels, and Five Iron Golf at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi keeps it indoors with simulators — handy for hot afternoons.

For something cheaper, rent a bike through the Careem app at spots like Dubai Marina and Kite Beach, or head to Nad Al Sheba Cycle Park and the Al Qudra Cycle Track for longer rides with older kids. Picnics are equally easy: Al Safa Park, Zabeel Park and Mushrif National Park all have playgrounds and barbecue areas, and Kite Beach covers the sea-and-sand version.

Now the stress-relief option. The Smash Room in Al Quoz hands you protective gear and a baseball bat and lets you destroy plates, bottles, old TVs and printers. It's aimed at older kids and up (check minimum ages before booking) and makes a memorably odd family afternoon. Al Quoz is also Dubai's pottery hub — Yadawei Ceramic Studio, The Mud House Studio and Studio Thirteen all operate there, with Dubai Pottery Studio serving Marina and JLT. You leave with a handmade souvenir, which beats another fridge magnet.

For the water, Hatta Dam is about 90 minutes from Dubai and offers kayaking and pedal boats against mountain scenery — a proper change from the skyline. Shorter on time? Crystal Clear Watersports at Palm Jumeirah runs guided kayaking tours through calm Gulf waters.

Air-conditioned options tick the learning-without-noticing box: Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo and House of Hype in Dubai Mall, The Green Planet's indoor tropical rainforest with its sloths and exotic birds, and Illusion City on Bluewaters Island with its upside-down photo sets.

And when only a theme park will do, Aquaventure World at Atlantis The Palm covers water slides and lazy rivers, IMG Worlds of Adventure packs Marvel, Cartoon Network and dinosaurs under one roof, and Motiongate Dubai at Dubai Parks and Resorts brings Hollywood-themed rides and shows.

Who's this for? Families with a mix of ages who want options beyond the obvious — most of these work in summer (indoor) or the cooler months (outdoor), and several cost little more than a picnic and bike rental. Mix two or three into a Dubai trip and the kids may not even ask for the iPad.
