A slice of Bavaria has landed on the Algarve coast. Vila Vita Biergarten in Porches has launched its annual Game Season menu, trading summer salads for venison, wild boar and partridge in a dining room built around wooden tables and a proper beer-garden atmosphere.

The seasonal menu, created by Chef Marhareta Guerreiro, runs daily from 12.30pm to 10pm until November 16 and leans on Germany's autumn game-hunting traditions. Expect the season's supporting cast everywhere: chestnuts, mushrooms and pumpkin show up in soups, dumplings and sauces alongside the meat.

Start with the Hunter's Platter (€24), a grazing board of game alheira, wild boar chorizo, game sausage, cured venison ham and a game empanada, served with quince paste. Smaller openers include a creamy mushroom and chestnut soup (€7) and pickled partridge (€13) with Portuguese cornbread, red onion and pomegranate.

The mains are built for cold evenings. Saddle of venison (€32) arrives with sautéed potatoes, red cabbage and a red wine and juniper sauce. Wild boar goulash (€25) comes with pumpkin Spätzle, and there's a wild boar Jägerschnitzel (€26) with German bread dumplings and mushroom sauce. Vegetarians get the wild mushroom and chestnut Maultaschen (€19) — a meat-free take on the German filled pasta. Finish with walnut cake and vanilla ice cream (€9).

Unsurprisingly, beer is part of the pitch. German labels and craft brews are recommended pairings, including Porches Craft Beer from just down the road. If you'd rather eat at home, the whole menu is available for same-day takeaway by calling 282 381 177.

For travellers, this is a neat autumn angle on a region better known for beach season. November in the Algarve is quieter, milder and cheaper than summer, and a hearty game dinner in a beer-garden setting is a fun contrast to the usual grilled-fish routine. It suits couples after a cosy evening meal, food-loving groups, and anyone combining a late-season Algarve escape with Central European comfort food. Just note the deadline — the menu disappears after November 16, so plan your visit within the season's short window.
