Big Sky, Montana, sits about 45 miles south of Bozeman, and it has quietly become one of the most interesting mountain towns in the American West. The setting explains a lot: winter skiing under Lone Peak, summer rafting and fly-fishing on the Gallatin River, horseback riding across open ranchland in fall, and Yellowstone National Park roughly an hour south. The town itself is small but lively, with a solid roster of restaurants, shops and bars.

What has changed lately is the accommodation scene. One&Only made its US debut in 2025 with Moonlight Basin, a luxury alpine retreat spread across 240 secluded acres inside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Guests reach the slopes via the brand's own gondola, and the property offers a 17,000-square-foot spa with an indoor-outdoor lap pool, onsen soaking tub, cold plunge, steam room and sauna. Because it links two sections of protected wilderness, wildlife sightings — moose and bobcats among them — are part of the deal, and there's even an on-site observatory for stargazing.

Montage Big Sky, the region's first five-star resort, remains the standard-bearer for polish. Its 139 rooms and residences come with mountain-view terraces and gas fireplaces, plus an 11,000-square-foot spa and a lively après scene — Beartooth Pub & Rec serves Wagyu nachos and giant hot pretzels with beer-cheese dip.

Travellers wanting something more rooted in the Old West should look at Lone Mountain Ranch, one of Montana's longest-running dude ranches, less than 10 minutes from town. Its 25 restored historic cabins date back generations, and on-site wranglers coach riders of any level; the weeklong Cowgirl Up retreat draws women from around the world.

Rental options cover the rest of the spectrum. A ski-in/ski-out cabin in the Cowboy Heaven neighbourhood sleeps five at 8,300 feet with the slopes off the deck. A three-floor Moonlight Basin home with wood-burning fireplace and private hot tub sits about 1.2 miles from Big Sky Resort, best for four despite sleeping six. A modern eight-person house in the Gallatin Valley is the closest to Yellowstone on the list — about 45 minutes to the West Yellowstone entrance — with snowmobile trails nearby. Also in the Gallatin Valley, a home in the 10-house Aspects village pairs string-lit hot tub views of Ramshorn Ridge with a five-minute drive to downtown. For something different, a solar-powered Earthship in Michener Meadows runs on spring water across 20 private acres, and a walkable condo near the town center comes with shared pool, hot tub and sauna access.

Why it matters: Big Sky now spans every budget and style — full-service luxury, authentic ranch life, or a secluded cabin with a wood-fired sauna — all within day-trip range of Yellowstone. Skiers get one of the biggest resorts in North America; summer visitors get rivers, trails and wildlife. Anyone who dismissed it as a one-season ski town should look again.
